rule one: work hard.
rule two: take care of your athletes.
rule three: do NOT think about iwaizumi hajime.
all of these were fine until the JVA decided that what the national team really needed for the upcoming olympics was rival athletic trainers. Which meant the two of you in the same building for months.
two out of three isn't bad, right?

A poem inspired by moonbase theta out because am i projecting onto Roger and Alex? oh definitely I'm a sap and I miss my partner a lot shut up about it <3<3<3
Youâve always loved sports. Growing up, you tried to play every single one your school offered, even the less known ones. One could, of course, blame your older brother for this- he was obsessed with them, so you naturally followed in his footsteps. He played football, you were his training partner; he played basketball, your shots didn't reach midway to the hoop, but you had spirit and thatâs all that mattered.
At first you just wanted to spend time with him, but then that feeling turned into truly and genuinely enjoying sports; whether it was those where you had to be in a team and you could make friends, or individual ones, you didnât care. It gave you drive, purpose, and it was an escape from mundane life things like homework and house chores.Â
When you were eight, you discovered your true love, volleyball, while walking around a nearby park with your mother and at the time, baby sister. You saw a group of older girls playing, so you sat on a bench and spent hours watching them. Your mom had to physically drag you back to the house. You were enthralled because they looked so alive: ponytails swinging around, screams of euphoria whenever the ball touched the other side, high fives and real laughs.
That's when you fell in love with it.
To tell the truth, that love never leftâyou feel so strongly and passionately about it that even now, at twenty six, it is your full time job. It wasn't an easy journey, but you worked your ass off at university to achieve it. You're not a player. Sure, you played in school, but it became pretty clear that you preferred the theory, the study of it, how the players moved, how the body gets stronger and how it recovers.Â
(too much sports injuries in the family also influenced you)
And that's how you ended up studying kinesiology, to no one's surprise. Even after graduating, you still love to learn tricks and techniques, so you went on to get a few more certifications.Â
And because of all this, you're sitting cross-legged on the floor in your one-bedroom apartment living room, planning training sessions for none other than the MSBY Black Jackals volleyball team.Â
The Black Jackals are three time champions of the V. League, so when you got the call to join them last year, you didnât hesitate. You packed your bags and moved to Osaka, to the apartment they rented for you that neighbors the playersâ. Since then, youâve all been working your asses off to become champions again, aiming to dethrone the last champions, Tachibana Red Falcons.Â
Thereâs so much to do that youâre not surprised by the amount of papers spread out around you. Your laptop sits quietly on the coffee table with a half-finished spreadsheet coded with colors that only make sense to you. Thereâs a forgotten mug of coffee somewhere to your left, coffee gone cold.Â
Your pen taps rhythmically against your notes as you scan through your player notes, cross-checking with the last seasonâs data.Â
Pre-season means a fresh start, forgetting about the last seasonâs results and getting a new chance to win. It also means rebuilding with both old and new players. There are a lot of things to plan like conditioning, recovery plans, both individual and team adjustments. Everything needs to be better this year.Â
Perfect.Â
And when you want perfect, youâd do anything to achieve it. You check your notes for the third time.
Hinata Shouyou #21
Wing Spiker/Opposite Hitter.
Explosive. Always positive. Endless stamina, a tad reckless if left unsupervised. Work to adjust jump load,     reinforce cooldowns. Eager to work and get better, but sometimes forgets that rest is part of it too. Loves teamwork. A ray of sunshine.
Sakusa Kiyoomi #15
Wing Spiker/Outside Hitter
Meticulous. Controlled. Responsible and ahead of most recovery baselines because of his hyper-laxity. Could be prone to injuries if he wasnât who he is. Target high-impact, repetitive jumping and overall plyometrics. Very straight-forward. Hates getting sick.Â
Atsumu Miya #13
Setter
Brilliant. Also brilliantly annoying. Pushes past limits just to see where he can reach, which can be great, but also not. Likes to push teammates sometimes in unsavory ways, but he wants them to reach their full potential. Loves to take care of "his spikers". Mandatory rest days. Non-negotiable.Â
Koutarou Bokuto #12
Wing Spiker/Outside Hitter
Stable. Reliable. Brings high energy and positivity, both on and off court. Can have mood-dependent performances (better every day). Loves to ask questions, likes to take care of himself because injuries would bring him down. Regular check-ins. Also a ray of sunshine but does not play around if someone messes with his teammates.Â
These check-ins with Bokuto arenât just volleyball-related, theyâre personal. Because you know him, and he knows you too-probably too well.Â
After a while, you lose track of time. Your pen moves almost automatically as you organize your thoughts into neat columns and bullet points, and everything else fades into the background. The apartment is quiet, but thatâs not unusual, you prefer to work in silence.
This means you donât notice the time, you donât remember the (now cold) coffee, and you definitely donât notice your front door opening.Â
âHey.âÂ
You jump, stopping mid-note.Â
âWhat the fuck?âÂ
You look up with your heart still slamming in and out of your chest to find Bokuto leaning against the doorframe, already dressed for training.Â
âWhat the fuck, Kou. You scared me.âÂ
âIâve been here for three minutes,â he says. âCalled your name. Called you before heading over too.âÂ
You shrink a little. Right. Your phone. Where is that, actually.Â
â...Shit.â
âYou didnât answer,â he continues, pushing himself off the frame. âSo I came over.âÂ
He has a key to your place, which heâs always hadâyou gave him one the first day you moved in and have never questioned his reasons for coming over. Not that he needs a reason, anyway. You sigh, dragging a hand down your face.Â
âIs it time to go?âÂ
He ignores your question completely and walks further inside instead, dropping onto your couch. His big golden eyes flick once over the scattered papers, the laptop and colored pens, then they focus on you.Â
âDid you sleep?â
You freeze for half a second. âI did.âÂ
He tilts his head. âMore than five hours?âÂ
You exhale, shoulders dropping slightly.
âI canât lie to you.âÂ
Bokuto snorts knowingly.Â
âIâd know even if you tried.âÂ
You push yourself up from the floor, stretching your arms above your head, back popping and giving you a sense of relief.Â
âIâm fine, Bo.â
He doesnât answer right away, but his gaze moves again, now slowly, from the mess of your notes, to the coffee you havenât touched, to the way you crane your neck from side to side.Â
âYouâre gonna pass out someday, bug.âÂ
You know he means it when the nickname from college makes an appearance, so you turn to him, smiling gently.Â
âI promise Iâm fine, Kou.âÂ
He studies you for a moment, like heâs deciding whether to push you. But even you know that sometimes, thatâs a losing battle. Youâre not oblivious to your friendsâ concern, but if it ainât broken, donât fix it.
He decides.Â
â...yeah. Alright.âÂ
You know thereâs a silent for now at the end there.Â
âIâm gonna go change,â you say, already moving. âBe right back."
You rush to your bedroom and change quickly, muscle memory guiding you through the motions. Mental checklist: Black Jackals polo and pants. Socks. Shoes are by the door. Hair tie on your wrist. All good.Â
Your bag is heavier than it needs to be already, and thatâs without the laptop, notes and backup notes. But itâs the first day, so you take your stash of snacks, your new scissors and resistance bands (Hinata broke your last ones) for your desk. By the time you step back out, Bokuto is already on his feet. You get everything you had laying around into your bag and straighten up.Â
âYours or mine?â You ask.Â
He grins, holding up his hand and jingling his keys. They make such noise because it has a couple of keychains hanging from them- one from you, one from Kuroo and Kenma and one from his partner, Akaashi.Â
âAlright, letâs go!â he says, practically bouncing on his heels. âIâm so pumped for today. I even dreamed about volleyball last night.âÂ
You roll your eyes, smiling as you lock the door behind you.Â
âBo, you dream about volleyball every day.âÂ
And itâs true, though sometimes heâs playing on the moon, or with a giant ball, or while flying.Â
âI know!â he beams, heading toward the car. âBut this one was cooler. Akaashi and Kuroo were there too.âÂ
âHell yeah, that does sound cool.âÂ
He nods seriously.Â
âIt was.âÂ
Bokuto barely waits for the car to stop before heâs out of it. The door slams, his bag already halfway off his shoulder as he jogs toward the gym with energy practically spilling out of him. You donât even try to follow at his pace because that too is a losing game. This is why you drove today, he couldnât stop bouncing in anticipation.Â
You laugh under your breath, shaking your head as you reach over to grab your own bag, and his water bottle, which he of course forgot. Itâs covered in stickers- volleyball jerseys, balls, his sisterâs dog, an onigiri, and a couple of owls. You turn it once in your hand, smiling faintly at them before stepping out of the car.Â
And itâs not that youâre not excited, of course you are. Pre-season is always exhilaratingâgetting back into the groove, reuniting with colleagues and possibilities all around. But your best friend is a giant golden retriever in human form, and compared to him, everyone looks calm, even when excited. Youâve always loved that about him.Â
Youâll never forget the day you met him, or more accurately, the days you met Bokuto and your other best friend Kuroo Tetsurou.Â
You met the latter first.Â
You were desperate. Barely managing your first-year schedule, overloaded coursework, and chemistry of all things (you were never good at it) threatening to ruin your GPA. So you did what any sleep-deprived, frustrated student would doâyou scribbled a need chem tutor note, pinned it to a bulletin board and hoped for the best.Â
(if you were crying in your dorm at three a.m just before, itâs no oneâs business but your own)Â
What you got was Kuroo Tetsurou. A sports management major who was annoyingly smart all around, and an apparent genius in all things chemistry related. His hair was kind of weird, but you ignored that.Â
He helped. A lot. He explained things in a way that actually made sense, he was patient and never judged you, stayed longer than he needed to, too. Somewhere between formulas and equations and very late study sessions, he became your friend.Â
Which is how you ended up walking across campus with him one afternoon.Â
âYouâre gonna love him,â Kuroo had said, hands shoved in his pockets and way too amused about something you didnât understand yet.Â
âWhy do I feel like thereâs something youâre not telling me?âÂ
He just shrugged and continued on smirking. Halfway to where you were going to meet his best friend, you felt something land on your shoulder. You froze.Â
â...Kuroo?â
âYeah?âÂ
â...thereâs something on me.âÂ
âOkay.âÂ
âItâs moving.â
He leans slightly to look and thenâ
âOh.âÂ
You didn't like that âoh.â At all.Â
âWhat kind of oh is thatââ
âItâs a beetle.âÂ
You screamed sharply, a horrified noise that made your entire body jolt, hands flying up as you tried to brush it offâwhich actually made it worse, because then it flew to your hair.
âOh my god, oh my godâget it outâget it out!â
You were fully flailing, waving your arms like a maniac and half spinning in place while Kuroo lost it. Like, fully lost it. Heâd bent over, shoulders shaking with that awful hyena laugh echoing across campusâall while you were actively experiencing what might have been one of the top five worst moments of your life.Â
âYouâre not helping!âÂ
âI canâtââ he choked out. âI canât! Thisâthis is incredible.âÂ
âIâm going to kill you!âÂ
Thenâ
âHey hey hey!âÂ
It was a blur of movement, but you faintly saw a large figure run towards you before stopping just in front of you.Â
âDonât move!â he said, hands hovering near your head.Â
You froze instantly. You did not know this man, therefore you didn't trust him, but you were immensely desperate, so you obeyed. The first thing you noticed is that he was careful despite the sheer size of himâbroad shoulders, strong armsâhis movements were precise and gentle as he carefully disentangled the beetle from your hair.Â
âGot it,â he murmured, stepping back slightly.Â
And instead of flicking it or dropping it to crush it (like you wanted to) he just let it go, watching it fly off with big golden eyes. You blinked up at him and his grin was so bright and easy that it immediately disarmed you. Your shoulders dropped in relief.Â
âYouâre good!âÂ
â...thank you.â
âNo problem!â
Kuroo, the asshole, finally recovered enough to stand upright again, still snickering as he gestured between you.Â
âPerfect timing, Bo!âÂ
Bokuto beamed. You sighed, dragging a hand down your face.Â
âGreat. Love that that just happened and that apparently this is how I meet people now.âÂ
âBug,â Kuroo choked out as he started to laugh again. âYour face.âÂ
You turn slowly. âDonât.â
Bokuto lit up immediately.
âBug! Thatâs cute! Iâm calling you that.âÂ
âNo.â
It stuck anyway, of course.Â
You huff out a quiet laugh at the memory as you reach the gym doors. Some things never change and you silently hope they never do. You push the door open, step inside and smile immediately.Â
You love the training facility. The court is the first thing you seeâempty, untouched. The wood gleams from a recent clean, reflecting the overhead lights that are bright, but not blinding. For now, the air smells like rubber and disinfectant. You think for now because it wonât last long. In a couple of hours, itâll be all sweat and movement and noise. A chaos you love, but you also enjoy this.Â
You turn right, heading toward the hallway where the locker rooms, the gym, and the offices are. Yours is the third door, right next to the gym. Thereâs a small plaque outside with your name on it, something you donât think youâll ever get used to.Â
You step inside, closing the door behind you, and just like that you settle. This is your space, your safe haven. These four walls hold more hours of your life than anywhere else. Honestly, if it had a bed, you could probably live here without much complaint. Bokuto didn't let you.Â
Thereâs a massage table on the far right with a stool tucked underneath it. Your desk faces the door, two chairs placed in front for players who inevitably end up sitting hereâeither willing or reluctantly. Behind your chair are two large windows that let in natural light. It might be your favorite part.Â
You walk over and drop into your chair. For a second you just sit, basking in it, the feeling you get here. Then your eyes drift to the desk where a few framed pictures sit.
The first is your graduation. You and your family, everyone smiling and posing with your diploma.Â
The next one is from last season. Youâre in the middle, barely visible under a mess of long limbs as Hinata, Bokuto, Sakusa and Atsumu crush you into a sweaty group hug after a win.Â
Then the last photo is you, Bokuto and Kuroo, passed out and basically cuddled up in the back of a car in the most uncomfortable position possible. It was taken by Kenma and Akaashi during a roadtrip. They thought it was cute, but also hilarious because they knew you three would wake up with sore necks.Â
You reach for your bag, pulling your things out one by one and placing them where they belong. It might be methodical, but itâs comforting too. By the time youâre done, everything is exactly how you like it.Â
Youâre focused on todayâs to-do list when a knock breaks your concentration.Â
âCome in!âÂ
The door opens, and you brighten immediately, not caring about the intrusion at all.Â
âCoach Foster, good morning.âÂ
You stand, offering a small bow. He smiles in return, a warm grin that crinkles the corner of his eyes.Â
âMorning.âÂ
You gesture to the chairs. âPlease, sit.âÂ
He closes the door behind him and takes a seat, his gaze flickering briefly over your laptop and the spread of notes across your desk.Â
âAlready working, huh?âÂ
You smile sheepishly. âYou know me, coach.âÂ
He chuckles, nodding, then leans forward slightly and interlaces his fingers on the desk.Â
âAlright, letâs go over goals for the year. Personal and professional.âÂ
You nod, closing the laptop and turning your attention fully to the older man in front of you.Â
âWin the league.âÂ
He laughs softly. âWeâve got that one in common. Go on.âÂ
You smile and continue, counting on your fingers.Â
âGet the team to actually come in for treatment before their injuries get worse. Improve team dynamics. Help them manage frustration better. Manage my own frustrations better.â
A small pause.Â
âAnd⌠stop being mean and sarcastic to the press.â You grimace slightly. âThey just get on my nerves.âÂ
He nods knowingly. âThey can be⌠persistent.âÂ
You huff a quiet laugh. âPersistent is the nice term for it, coach.âÂ
He shrugs, but smirks. âThose are good goals. Do you have any personal ones youâd like to share?âÂ
You tilt your head. âThose are personal too.â
He shakes his head gently.Â
âNo. Those are work related.âÂ
You frown, thinking.Â
âGet my CPR recertification."
He sighs, but itâs not an annoyance, itâs patience. It reminds you a little too much of your parents back in high school and Kuroo back in university.Â
âAlso work.âÂ
You blink.Â
â...Oh.âÂ
âWhy donât you think about those and get back to me?âÂ
You nod slowly, a little thrown off. âYeah. Okay.âÂ
He straightens slightly.Â
âMy turn,â he says. âWin the league. Maintain a good relationship with players and staff. Guide the younger ones. Hide my exasperation when they get annoying a little better.â
You smile.Â
Then he adds, softer, âand personallyâI want to spend more time with my wife and daughters. Learn a new language. Read more.â A small pauseâ
âSee?â he says gently. âNot work.âÂ
âI see.âÂ
He places his palms on the desk and stands.Â
âGood. You've got a few minutes of quiet before the chaos starts. Enjoy them.âÂ
You let out a soft laugh. âI will. See you out there.â
He smiles once more before heading out, the door closes quietly behind him. Youâre left alone and sitting there thinking. Personal goals. You lean back slightly in your chair, staring at nothing in particular.Â
Maybe⌠see your friends more? You frown, you already do that.Â
Get a plant? You glance at your desk, actually considering for a second, but that would probably die.Â
Whatever. Youâll think about it later.Â
By the time you finish reviewing your plans and transferring your notes from the laptop to the team tabletâyour phone buzzes.Â
MSBY Black JackalsÂ
Coach Foster:Â Meeting room in 5.Â
You see a bunch of thumbs up multiplying as the team reacts. You do the same and grab your things, and Bokutoâs water bottle, and step out, heading to the room a couple of doors down. The moment you walk in, bright orange wavy hair fills your vision.Â
âHi! Itâs been so long!â
You laugh immediately, a usual occurrence around him.Â
âShou, I saw you last week.âÂ
Hinata grins. âExactly!â
You shake your head, smiling, before glancing past him where Sakusa stands a few steps behind, mask perfectly placed and with a calm expression.Â
âGood morning,â he says with a small nod. âHow are you?âÂ
âHey, Sakusa. I'm good, how are you?âÂ
âIâm okay,â he replies. âDespite Mita already managing to annoy me.âÂ
You laugh, but a voice behind you cuts in before you can answer.Â
âAnnoy ya? I just said âheyâ, Omi.âÂ
Atsumu Miyaâs arm drops over your shoulder before you can turn around. Kiyoomi just stares blankly at him and the setter groans like he gets the meaning behind it.Â
â...fine. Sorry.âÂ
Kiyoomi nods once, apparently satisfied, and then turns away to take a seat. You snort and glance up at the blond twin.Â
âHello, Atsumu.â
He looks down at you, flashing his usual charming grin.Â
âWell, hello to you too. Enjoyinâ the chaos already?âÂ
You sigh dramatically. âI am, but I would enjoy it far more with some onigiri.âÂ
He recoils.
âNo! At least say ya missed me before bringinâ up that ugly bastard.âÂ
You nudge his arm off your shoulders with a laugh.Â
âFirst of all, I saw you last week. Secondâyou have the same face, so youâre ugly too.âÂ
He smirks.Â
âNo. Iâm the pretty one.âÂ
You roll your eyes. âSure, Atsumu."
âKnew ya agreed!â He grins as he walks over to sit beside Kiyoomi, who immediately glares at him.Â
Across the room, Bokuto is mid-conversation with another player. You make your way over.Â
âHey, Inunaki-sanâsorry to interrupt.â
He smiles easily. âHey, all good.âÂ
You hand over the bottle.Â
âHere. You forgot this.âÂ
Bokuto lights up.Â
âKnew I was forgetting something. Thanks. Youâre the best.âÂ
You smile, gesturing towards the seats.Â
âI know. Now go sit, coach is here.âÂ
They nod, heading off.Â
You sit on the three main chairs that face the rest of them, where the entire roster is already sitting, chatting idly. Coach Foster walks further inside with assistant coach Mukai Kaito and conversation around the room gradually quiets down.Â
Well, except for Bokuto who is whispering something to Hinata while Atsumu listens in.Â
Coach Foster sits and claps once.
âAlright, listen up.âÂ
The room settles fully at that. You glance around automatically, taking in the familiar sight of all of them together again. Some are sprawled in their chairs, leaning back comfortably, while others lean forward with focused expressions. Still, there is the unmistakable buzzing energy under everyoneâs skin.Â
Coach folds his arms. âFirst things firstâwelcome back, Itâs nice to see you all. Hope you enjoyed your break. Now letâs get to business. Last season was good.âÂ
Atsumu mutters a smug little damn right, earning himself a harsh nudge from Sakusa. A common occurrence.Â
âBut,â Foster continues, âgood isnât enough for this team.âÂ
Atsumu pouts. The room sharpens immediately.Â
âWe are not here to be good. We are here to be the best team in this league.âÂ
That earns him a few grins, a few nods and a Bokuto fist pump while Hinata practically bounces next to him. Coach gestures toward the screen behind him, where the season schedule appears. Â
âThis pre-season is gonna be packed. Conditioning, media obligations, sponsor events, exhibition matches.â
A collective groan immediately fills the room after media obligations. You snort quietly.Â
âDonât complain yet,â Kaito says dryly. âYou havenât seen the full schedule yet.âÂ
The next slide appears. Photoshoots, interviews, sponsor appearances, community events.Â
âThereâs three photoshoots?â Captain Meian asks while the others groan.Â
âFour,â you correct, already having the schedule memorized from when Kaito sent it a few days back.Â
The room erupts.Â
âWhat?!â Atsumu cries out.Â
âDo we have to wear suits again?â Hinata asks, defeated.Â
âYes,â Coach says immediately.Â
Sakusa visibly deflates at that, and you have to hide your smile behind your tablet.Â
âWell, good news is,â Kaito says. âOne of the sponsors requested a casual shoot.â
The atmosphere improves immediately.Â
âSee?â Bokuto says proudly, âthey wouldnât do us like that.âÂ
We ignore him. Coach continues, switching slides again.Â
âNow, as for pre-season matches.âÂ
The room stills slightly and you know this is the part they actually care about. You love watching them suffer through photoshoots and interviews, but seeing them play is a million times better.
âFirst exhibition match will be against EJP Raijin.âÂ
You sneak a glance at Bokuto, Sakusa and Atsumu, knowing they have friends, in the case of Koutarou and Atsumu, and family, in the case of Kiyoomi, that play at EJP Raijin. They turn to each other, smirking.Â
âSecond will be Schweiden Adlers.âÂ
You knew this was coming. The shift in the room is immediate, almost palpable. The Adlers were your greatest rivals and competition last season, going back and forth on all sets played. Thereâs excitement, especially in Shouyouâs eyes, undoubtedly thinking about his best friend (and rival) Kageyama.Â
âOh, thatâll be fun.â Atsumu grins.Â
âIf we win,â Kiyoomi mutters.Â
Coach continues before things can escalate.Â
âAnd finally, the Spanish club team Madrid Volley Elite will be coming to Japan at the end of pre-season.âÂ
âYes,â Kaito replies. âThe JVA wants international collaboration before Olympic selections begin.â
Coach glances toward you briefly, signaling itâs your cue. So you straighten in your chair, setting your tablet down and looking around the room. Restless eyes, focused eyesâathletes who love this sport so much it consumes them, no matter how much they sacrifice for it. The sentiment applies to you too.Â
âYou guys were incredible last season,â you start honestly.Â
âYa hear that, she loves us.âÂ
âDonât make me take it back, Miya,â you reply flatly, earning a laugh from around the room.Â
Then you continue.Â
âYou worked hard. Harder than most people could ever know. You pushed through injuries, exhaustion, frustration⌠and still made it to the top three. Butââ
That one word sharpens everyone again.Â
âYou can do better.â
They know you mean it without being offensive or overly-critical. Plus, you know they can take it.Â
âYou know your weaknesses, you know when communication is needed and you know what to do when pressure gets to you. Those are good things. Still, you donât become champions by pretending thereâs nothing to improve.âÂ
You pause briefly and smile.Â
âAnd who doesnât love getting better? We all are so into about volleyball that itâs actually a little concerning sometimes,â you say dryly, earning a few laughs. âWe use that. Push each other, trust each other. Let this season be hard, let it be challenging. We can take it.âÂ
Thereâs silence for a second as your words get through to each of them. Of course, Bokuto breaks it with a shout.Â
âHell yeah!â
The room bursts into noise immediately after. Hinataâs fired up, matching Bokutoâs screams, Atsumuâs grinning and poking Sakusaâs arm, who looks very solemn (which means heâs excited too).Â
Coach Foster shakes his head (the three of you do that a lot) with a small smile.Â
âAlright, alright,â he says over the noise. âNot that sheâs got you all fired upâgo get changed. Assessments start in twenty.â
Chairs scrape loudly against the floor as the room erupts into motion. You sit there, next to a grinning Kaito, watching them all come alive. As everyone rushes toward the locker rooms, conversations overlap over each other.Â
âWe should start with serves today.âÂ
âWhy are ya already taping yer fingers?â
âBecause some of us care about longevity, Miya.âÂ
âItâs been twenty seconds, Omi!âÂ
They wonât even touch a ball for a while since physical assessments and medical check-ins are first (just like every season) but they donât care, theyâre excited.Â
So are you. Thereâs no denying it.Â
The room empties until itâs just you, Kaito and Foster gathering papers on the table. Youâre still seated when Kaito turns slightly toward you and says your name softly enough to pull your attention away from your tablet. You glance over.Â
âWhatâs up?âÂ
You and Kaito work closely together. Long hours, constant communication, shared responsibilityâit was easy to fall into familiarity with him. Part of you thinks he might have a small crush on you, but the other part thinks spending fourteen-hour days together probably creates said familiarity.Â
He taps his fingers lightly against the desk.Â
âHave you heard anything about the Adlers?âÂ
âThe Adlers?âÂ
âRumor is theyâve got a new athletic trainer this season."
You tilt your head.
âOh really? I hadnât heard anything.âÂ
Kaito shrugs. âMight be false. Just figured Iâd ask.âÂ
You hum thoughtfully, leaning back slightly in your chair.
âIf itâs true, I donât think itâs anyone I know.âÂ
âYeah,â he says. âIâll keep an ear out.â
You nod once. âKeep me updated.âÂ
He laughs quietly, shaking his head.Â
âYouâre so competitive.âÂ
A slow smirk pulls at your mouth.Â
âIs that a bad thing?âÂ
âNot when weâre on the same team.âÂ
You laugh softly just as Coach approaches, folders neatly tucked under one arm.Â
âThatâs exactly why sheâs on my side whenever we play cards,â he says.Â
Kaito groans immediately.Â
âOh my god, not this again.â
You raise your fist toward coach without hesitation. He laughs, bumping his knuckles lightly into yours.Â
âYou two are too smug,â Kaito points.Â
âYou only say that,â you say, standing and grabbing your tablet, âbecause you lose every time.âÂ
âThatâs because Coach cheats and you distract everyone while he does.âÂ
âI strategize,â Foster corrects.Â
I nod.Â
âIâll win someday and youâll never hear the end of it.â Kaito mutters, standing as well.Â
You grin as the three of you head toward the gym floor, following the noise of the team thatâs already echoing through the facility. Itâs loud and familiar, and makes you feel so alive.Â
Minutes later, youâre setting up everything you need in the gym room for the initial assessmentsâcones, recording tablets, reaction lights, heart rate monitors. The team is usually too excited to focus on anything except getting back onto the court, but that means the gym assessments tend to move quickly. They can be disciplined when they want to be.Â
Unfortunately, theyâre also idiots.Â
You connect your phone to the speakers, one of your many playlists, carefully curated to keep the energy high but aggressive enough to motivate them. The voices echoing from the locker room starts getting closer as the players start flooding in.Â
Shouyou jogs in, stretching his shoulders while talking Kiyoomiâs ear off, who looks only mildly impressed at whatever the conversation is. Atsumu and Koutarou enter having a debate about something completely nonsensical.  Everyone gradually settles into a loose circle around you.Â
âAlright,â Atsumu says before you can even get a word in, grinning lazily, âwhoâs gonna break my record today?âÂ
âYou ask that every time,â Sakusa mutters.Â
âAnd every time, no one does.âÂ
You clap your hands once before the usual spiral happens whenever these two get into it.Â
âOkay, enough. Letâs get to work.â
Baseline assessments go smoothly enoughâheart rates, oxygen saturation, blood pressure during intervals. Then strength testing. Height, weight, fatigue resistance. Followed by vertical jumps, reaction-time drills using the colored lights that flash across the wall.Â
You genuinely enjoy this part, not just because you studied all this and know that data matters, but because the players care. Even if they act ridiculous about it. Every new measurement becomes a challenge against themselves, against last year, against each other.Â
Against you, even.Â
âYou cheated!âÂ
âHow does one cheat a vertical jump, Tsum-tsum?âÂ
âI dunno but ya did, Bokkun!â
âI just literally jumped.âÂ
On the side, Hinata practically bounces with excitement as he hypes both Atsumu and Bokuto equally.Â
âDo it again!âÂ
Beside him, Kiyoomi analyzes the numbers quietly, pretending not to care while actually measuring how much he has to jump higher to beat their records. You catch the tiny narrowing of his eyes when Atsumu beats on his reaction times.
Youâve always found those two interesting.Â
Across the room, Kaito watches the chaos with a trained level of calm. Captain Meian Shugo keeps trying to reprimand the team every five minutes.Â
âGuys, seriously, settle downâsorry,â he says to you immediately after.Â
You wave him off with a laugh every time.Â
âItâs fine, Meian-san.âÂ
At one point you have to stop recording entirely because half the team notices the camera and immediately starts striking ridiculous poses behind Bokuto who is trying not to laugh while he bench presses. By the time itâs over, hours have passed and the players are sweaty, energized and somehow more excited to get onto the court than they were this morning.
Itâs a dangerous amount of energy, honesty.Â
Still, they help clean up without complaining, carrying equipment back into storage while striking conversations around the room. Youâre organizing things near the far end when Bokuto appears beside you carrying a stack of cones.Â
âHey,â he says, nudging your shoulder lightly. âWeâre still on for tonight, right? Keijiâs excited.âÂ
You glance up immediately. âOf course, I miss my Keiji-kun.âÂ
Keiji AkaashiâKoutarouâs partner and one of your best friendsâlives in Tokyo working full time as manga editor. He visits Osaka whenever he can, but between schedules and away games, it never feels like enough. Heâs spending a couple of weeks here on vacation, which means Bokuto has been reminding everyone of this approximately every hour.Â
Speaking of, he gasps dramatically.Â
âHeâs my Keiji! You have to stop saying stuff like that. One day heâs gonna leave me for you.âÂ
His expression is mournful enough that someone unfamiliar with him might believe he truly believes what he just said, but both of you know better.Â
âHe would never,â you say fondly, always in awe of the love those two share.Â
Bokuto brightens.Â
âRight! Akaashiâs the best!âÂ
Atsumu suddenly leans into the conversation.Â
âMe and Samu are bringinâ Keiji-kun his favorite onigiri tonight.âÂ
You snort immediately.Â
âYou mean Osamu is, and youâre just roaching off of him.âÂ
Atsumu clutches his chest in offense.Â
âYa wound me, sweetheart.âÂ
You roll your eyes affectionately.Â
âGo tape your fingers. Both of you.âÂ
Atsumu straightens immediately, saluting as if you were a high-ranking officer, which Bokuto copies a second later.Â
âMaâam, yes maâam.âÂ
Then they walk off together, Bokuto immediately launching into another excited rant about his Keiji, while Atsumu listens and nods back with the same enthusiasm, always a good friend.Â
You watch them go with a small smile.Â
Watching the Black Jackals right now, someone unfamiliar with them would probably think this was a championship final instead of the first practice of pre-season. Theyâre fully locked in. The team had been split by Foster for scrimmaging, and somehow it already felt like no break had happened at all and they hadn't spent weeks apart during the off-season.
Especially after Kaito had announced the teams. Putting Atsumu and Hinata against Bokuto and Sakusa had immediately changed the atmosphere. Coach Foster had shared a look with you the moment after the announcement. You know it was a silent here we go.Â
Everyone, even people who arenât into volleyball, knows that those four are inseparable. Best friends, teammates who trust each other completely. That only made them more competitive.Â
âShou-kun!â Atsumuâs voice cuts across the gym as he launches a beautiful set, a love letter to his spiker.
Hinata answers by jumping instantly and there it isâ
The shift in his eyes. You love watching it happen. The second heâs in the air, itâs like everything else disappears and his focus sharpens into something almost electric- all skill, trust and utter joy wrapped into one explosive moment. His spike lands hard against the floor and the sound echoes through the gym even over the shouts of the opposing side. He lands smoothly, already grinning while Atsumu yells in triumph beside him.Â
Across the net, Bokuto watches them celebrate with a dangerous little smirk on his face.Â
Oh shit. Heâs taking that personally. Good luck to everyone involved.Â
The scrimmage goes on like that for a whileâfast paced, intense and way too competitive for day one. You sit beside Coach Foster and Kaito at the bench, tablet balanced on your knee while the three of you exchange observations between plays.Â
On the court, Atsumu proves Fosterâs point by yelling-Â
âTry that again, ya cowards!âÂ
Bokuto yells back, not missing a beat-
âWe will!â
Sakusa sighs beside him.Â
Eventually, after several rounds and way too much screaming, Atsumu and Hinataâs team wins the final set. Just barely.Â
Everyoneâs flushed and panting afterward, hands braced on their knees while sweat drips onto the polished floors. You stand from the bench, nodding in approval.Â
âThat was good, guys. Letâs stretch and hit the showers.â
The collective groan is immediate, which in turn makes you laugh loudly.
âYouâre the ones who went that hard on the first day.âÂ
Hinata wipes sweat from his forehead with the hem of his shirt, smiling tiredly.Â
âWe didnât even go that hard.âÂ
You point toward the younger recruits, âTell that to them."
The two newest players immediately straighten.Â
âThat was so cool,â one of them blurts out.Â
Shouyouâs smile softens into the bright and genuine way that only he manages.Â
âI know! You guys did great! Weâre glad to have you.âÂ
Your chest warms. You nod toward them.Â
âThat we are. But stretch now, or tomorrow youâll forget how amazing today felt.â
They nod quickly before dropping onto the floor to start stretching properly. You glance back toward Foster and Kaito.Â
âIâll be in my office.âÂ
They nod, but before youâre completely out, Coach calls after you in his full coach voice-Â
âIf youâre not out of here in an hour, Iâll make Bokuto carry you out.â
You keep walking, waving a hand and smiling.Â
âMy doorâs open!â
Back in your office, the quiet welcomes you like an old friend almost immediately. You exhale softly and pull your ponytail free, sighing as your hair falls down around your shoulders. Then you sit, and reopen your laptop. Videos from practice play across the screen while you type rapidly, organizing notes by player, color-coding in your own system their strengths, points to strengthen, movement and recovery concerns. Your focus narrows so much that you barely notice time passing. It feels like twenty minutes at most.Â
So when you finally glance up because thereâs something thatâs tugging at your awareness, you find four men standing in front of your desk, you blink in genuine surprise.Â
Right.Â
Youâre glad that Coach Foster and the rest of the staff donât particularly care that youâre close friends with some of the players. That had been one of your biggest concerns when you first interviewed for the positionâBokuto had already been your best friend for years, and through him, youâd known Hinata too.Â
But the staff had only cared about two things:
No romantic relationshipsÂ
No favoritism.Â
Simple enough.
As for rule number one, that was impossible. You had cringed internally at the thought of dating any one of them. The second rule was achievable because youâre a professional. Everyoneâs accepted the dynamic, especially because Bokuto would rather die than act normal around you anyway. He knows when itâs time to treat you as his best friend, and when itâs athletic trainer time.Â
Standing in front of your desk now, Kiyoomi breaks the silence first.Â
âWe will carry you if needed."
Beside him, Atsumu nods seriously.Â
âWell, Bokkun will. My arms are kinda tired.â
You snort softly.Â
Bokuto suspiciously says nothing. Instead, his eyes drift over your desk just like they had this morning. Then he catches your gaze and smiles anyway.
âCâmon,â he says. âKeiji will be here soon.â
Your expression softens at the reminder.
âGive me two minutes to organize everything. Sit.âÂ
Shouyou and Atsumu race towards the couch instantly while Koutarou and Kiyoomi sit in the chairs in front of your desk. You work quickly after thatâsaving files, organizing folders, and stacking papers until your desk looks manageable again.Â
âAll done. Letâs go.â
The drive home is loud. Bokuto drives this time while you shit in the passenger seat, Atsumu follows behind with Kiyoomi and Shouyou in his car. One of Bokutoâs playlist, throwbacks to sing in the car, blasts through the speakers while the two of you sing along horribly. Like, genuinely horribly.Â
At the red light, you prop your phone against the dashboard and record a quick video of both of you butchering the chorus. You send it to the group chat.Â
walmart one direction (pre break-up)Â

You barely make it through the front door before Bokuto disappears into your kitchen.Â
âDonât touch anything!â, he yells immediately.Â
You blink slowly as you toe your shoes off.Â
â...itâs my kitchen.â
âNo, itâs not,â he calls back. âItâs our kitchen.âÂ
You donât bother arguing, instead you drop your bag near the couch and let yourself fall face first into the cushions. The apartment already smells warm and familiar. The others come in moments after. You let them argue among themselves around the kitchen while they heat-up the food you prepared yesterday, since you wouldnât have had time to do so today. You smile, listening to Kiyoomi boss everyone around.
You reach for your phone, thumbing through it as you click Kurooâs private chat.Â
you:Â hey tetsuÂ
tetsu:Â hello my fav bugÂ
you:Â my finger is hovering the block buttonÂ
tetsu:Â NO!!!!

tetsu:Â now go make sure bo and keiji donât have sex on your kitchen counterÂ
you:Â shit youâre rightÂ
you:Â have a good day at workÂ
you:Â call you laterÂ
You close your eyes for a few seconds, just to rest. But thenâ
âWhy are ya puttinâ the oven that high!âÂ
âItâs how Samu told me to do it!âÂ
âThat scrub ainât know shit!â
âMiya, youâre five seconds away from dropping the tray, please put it down.âÂ
You sit up immediately and rush toward the kitchen before your apartment gets absolutely destroyed. Rushing into the kitchen, the door swings open and shut quickly as you take in the scene in front of you.
Shouyou is focused on preparing rice, Atsumu and Koutarou are still arguing passionately about oven temperature while Kiyoomi calmly organizes cold dishes on the counter like heâs pretending the others arenât even there. You clear your throat loudly and everyone looks at you.Â
Hinata smiles immediately, Koutarou stares at you wide-eyed like heâs been caught doing something he shouldnât, Kiyoomi doesnât even look up at what heâs organizing and Atsumu points at the brownies.Â
âBokkun, please trust me on this.â
Bokuto sighs dramatically.Â
âFine. But if we end up without brownies, youâre going out to buy some.âÂ
Atsumu pumps a fist into the air. You snort softly.Â
âKou, come help me set the table.âÂ
Bokuto nods, abandoning the brownies without hesitation to gather plates from the cupboards and utensils from the cabinets. You head into the dining room first, spreading the tablecloth smoothly across the dining table before setting cups down one by one. You count automatically in your head up to seven. A moment later, Bokuto emerges balancing the plates and silverware in his arms. You immediately step closer before disaster strikes, because he might be amazing at volleyball, but he can be clumsy sometimes. You take the utensils and napkins from the top.Â
âYou know, normal people make two trips."
âIâm built different.âÂ
âOkay, Mr. I'm not like other guys.âÂ
You both start setting everything down, moving around each other easily from years of familiarity. The silence between you is comfortable, always has been. Then Bokuto breaks it by speaking quietly-
âYou think heâll like it?âÂ
You glance up. Thereâs something softer in his expression now, less loud excitement, more nervous anticipation. You know this look. A small smile tugs at your mouth as you finish placing a napkin beside a plate.Â
âOf course he will, Kou.âÂ
You look at him fully now.Â
âItâs Keiji. We could serve him literal rocks and heâd still be happy because it came from you. Even while being a glutton.âÂ
Bokutoâs eyes widen slightly, golden and big and earnest.Â
â...yeah,â he says softly. âYouâre right.âÂ
His whole expression melts afterward, all signs tension disappearing from his shoulders. Three minutes later, the apartment smells incredible and the kitchen has finally settled into organized chaos instead of impending disaster chaos. You're setting up the speakers when the doorbell rings. Your head lifts automatically, but you donât move because Bokuto is already sprinting out of the kitchen.Â
âKeiji!âÂ
The front door swings open hard enough to make you wince, and there he is.Â
Akaashi Keiji.Â
From where you stand, you can physically see his expression soften the second he looks at Bokuto. Itâs subtle, tiny, but so full of love it almost feels intrusive to witness.
âKoutarou,â Akaashi says softly.Â
Bokuto practically launches himself forward, wrapping Akaashi into a tight hug immediately. Despite being fairly tall himself, Keiji disappears slightly against Bokutoâs broader frame, arms circling around him without hesitation. You look away, just enough to give them a sliver of privacy. You know Akaashi isnât huge on PDA, but around close friends, heâs always been more openly affectionate.Â
After a few seconds, they pull back just enough for Akaashi to loop his arms around Bokutoâs neck and kiss him. In return, Bokutoâs hands settle at his waist. You smile faintly to yourself.Â
When they separate, both are smiling quietly. Then Akaashi gently pushes at Bokutoâs shoulder.Â
âNow let me go say hi to my wife.âÂ
Bokuto laughs brightly and steps aside immediately, as he should. Akaashi toes off his shoes by the entrance, leaves his luggage beside the door, and thatâs your cue.Â
âKeiji-kun!âÂ
Akaashi laughs softly just before you crash into him. His hug is warm and grounding in the way only old friendships can make you feel. Soft sweater fabric, slightly smudged glasses from the kiss, itâs all very Keiji and you love it.Â
âHow was the first day?â he asks as he steps back slightly. âDid they trouble you too much?âÂ
You laugh. âIt was fine. Nothing that Iâm not used to.âÂ
Akaashi snorts knowingly. Behind him, Bokuto immediately joins the conversation by draping himself against his boyfriend.Â
âCâmon,â he says excitedly. âThe others are finishing lunch.âÂ
Akaashi looks at you suspiciously. âIs it edible?âÂ
You laugh loudly, already pushing them both toward the kitchen.Â
âI made the food, theyâre just helping.âÂ
He sighs in relief. âGood.âÂ
Lunch turns out amazing. Not because the food is life-changingâyouâre good in the kitchen, but youâre not a Michelin-star chef, and youâre definitely not Osamu. Still, youâre proud of it.Â
Speaking of the brown-haired Miya, he showed up ten minutes after Keiji did, carrying one of Onigiri Miyaâs paper bags carefully in his hands. The second he placed it on the counter, everyone burst into laughter by the message written across in thick black sharpie.Â
FOR AKAASHI-KUN
NO TOUCHING
ESPECIALLY ATSUMU AND HIS PISS HAIR
Atsumu immediately looked offended.Â
âMy hair is not piss-colored.âÂ
âYes it is,â Kiyoomi said instantly.Â
âIt is,â you agreed, only to bother Atsumu, of course.Â
Hinata nodded seriously, but with a hint of humor in his eyes. âA little.â
âWhy am I surrounded by haters?â
âBecause yer annoyinâ and deserve it,â Osamu replied without even looking up.Â
Now, much later, everyoneâs still seated around the table with full stomachs and loose limbs. Every plate looks like theyâve been licked clean. The brownies had turned out well too, which Atsumu has mentioned at least seven times already.Â
âYa know,â he says again around a mouthful of brownie and vanilla ice cream, âitâs amazing how nobody believed in me.
âBecause you set the oven to practically volcanic,â you reply.Â
âAnd yetâ!âÂ
âAnd yet they survived. Yes Miya, weâve established this.â Sakusa says, deadpan.Â
Atsumu pouts.Â
The apartment hums with conversation and low background music. You love this, the laugher, the conversations, the way your best friendâs happiness infects the entire room so everyone is smiling too. Volleyball naturally becomes the topic eventually, but not in a work wayâno stats or schedules or training. Just old stories of old friends and nostalgia.Â
You glance toward Osamu from where youâre curled up in your chair, one knee up and balancing the brownie on it.Â
âHow is Suna, by the way.âÂ
Osamu smiles immediately.
âHeâs good. Complaining about waking up early for pre-season.âÂ
Atsumu snorts.
âHeâs always slept too much. Youâd think beinâ a professional athlete would change that.âÂ
Beside him, Sakusa sighs quietly.Â
âNot everyone wakes up at five a.m to run with Hinata.â
Hinata beams. âI like the sunrise.â
Bokuto bursts with laughter.Â
âI remember in high school Shou used to jump around so much during practice they couldnât wake him up the next day.âÂ
Hinata points accusingly. âThatâs because you guys practiced after-hours.âÂ
Bokuto puffs his chest proudly.
âThatâs how it had to be, my disciple.âÂ
Akaashi shakes his head lightly, smiling into his spoon. âThose camps were a mess.â
You grin. âI can only imagine you getting fed up with Kou and Tetsu.âÂ
Akaashi goes completely serious.Â
âYou donât know the half of it.â
Bokuto gasps. âKeiji!â
âWhat?âÂ
âYou loved us!âÂ
âI still do,â Akaashi rolls his eyes jokingly. âUnfortunately.â
Bokuto collapses sideways against Akaashi in fake devastation while his boyfriend continues eating his dessert like nothing happened.Â
Hours later, the sun has fully set, leaving your apartment washed in soft golden light from the lamps scattered around the living room. Shouyou, Kiyoomi, Atsumu and Osamu left around ten minutes ago, retreating to their apartments next door and Osamu to his place. Hinata and Atsumu sharing a place works pretty well, so does Bokuto and Sakusa living together.Â
You finish loading the dishwasher before dragging yourself back into the living room with a tired sigh, collapsing onto the couch beside Koutarou and Keiji. Akaashiâs seated in the middle, so you naturally lean sideways, resting your head against his shoulder. He glances down at you immediately.Â
âYou tired, bug?âÂ
Somehow you only like the nickname when he and Kenma say it.Â
(thatâs a lie, you enjoy it every time)Â
âIâm fine.âÂ
Bokuto snorts loudly from the other side.Â
âOh, so Keiji can call you bug but I canât? I see how it is."
You crack one eye open to look at him.Â
âKeiji says it with love. You and Tetsu say it like Iâm an actual insect.âÂ
âThatâs not true!â Bokuto protests. âI say it lovingly.âÂ
A beat.Â
â... I dunno about Tetsu though.âÂ
You laugh quietly, but as you do, you press two fingers lightly against your temple, which Akaashi notices right away.
âHeadache?âÂ
You hum softly, eyes closing again for a second.Â
âMaybe a little.âÂ
Bokuto immediately leans forward to peer around Akaashi at you.Â
âThatâs because you donât rest.âÂ
You sigh.Â
âDonât start, Kou.âÂ
When you open your eyes again, both of them are looking at youâconcerned and unconvinced. You straighten slightly.Â
âIâm fine,â you repeat, more firmly this time. They clearly donât believe you, but they also know when to let things go. So eventually, they nod.Â
Bokuto reaches for his phone.Â
âLetâs call the others.âÂ
You smile faintly and sit up properly, moving away from Akaashiâs shoulder as Bokuto starts the video call. The phone rings untilâ
âTetsu!â Bokuto yells.
Kuroo appears on screen, grinning immediately.Â
âBo!âÂ
âBug!â
âTetsu,â you warn instantly.Â
He ignores you completely.Â
âKeiji!â
âTetsurou,â Akaashi says with an exhausted tone that always seems to come out when Kurooâs involved.Â
Bokuto props the phone carefully against the vase in the center of your coffee table so everyone fits into frame.Â
âHow was work?â Bokuto asks immediately.Â
Kuroo shrugs loosely, smiling.
âSame old. How was the trip, Keiji?âÂ
âYeah. Travel sucks.â He glances away from the phone. âHold on, let me see if Kenmaâs free.âÂ
You all watch as he walks through the apartment, eventually poking his head inside a room. Even through the camera, you recognize pieces of it. You can see it clearly in your mind-Kenmaâs setup. Monitors glowing, controllers scattered around, streaming equipment everywhere, and that ridiculously chair youâre jealous of.Â
âYou streaming?â Kuroo whispers.Â
Thereâs a pause, you can also imagine Kenma shaking his head because Kuroo immediately walks in properly.Â
âLook who wants to say hi.âÂ
A few seconds later both of them appear on screen together.Â
âHey guys,â Kenma says softly, smiling in the way that is reserved almost exclusively for people he loves.Â
âKenken!âÂ
âKenma!â
âHey.âÂ
The three greetings overlap.Â
âYou streaming again later?â you ask.
Kenma nods once. âYeah. Iâm making Tetsurou play another horror game with me.âÂ
Kuroo groans dramatically, head falling back in despair.Â
âNoooo!âÂ
You burst out laughing and Akaashi nods approvingly.Â
âGood idea.âÂ
âYou guys are so mean to Tetsu,â Bokuto says, deeply betrayed on behalf of his best friend.Â
Kuroo points at the phone immediately.Â
âThank you! At least someone cares about me.âÂ
Bokuto pauses thoughtfully.Â
â...but it was really funny last time.âÂ
Kuroo gasps.Â
âBro! Traitor!âÂ
Everyone laughs and Kenma lets out a soft huff of amusement beside him. Kuroo pouts as he drops himself into the second chair beside Kenma. The conversation keeps flowing rapidly afterwardâwork, movies, games, Kenmaâs company, Bokutoâs sponsorships, Kurooâs plans, Akaashi and Tenmaâs new manga and your travel schedule for the season. Time flies easily.
A soft alarm goes off somewhere on Kenmaâs desk and he glances toward it immediately. Bokuto blinks.Â
Kuroo makes exaggerated kissing noises, even grabs the phone and brings it close to his lips.Â
You smile softly at both Bokutoâs thoughtfulness and Kurooâs behavior.Â
âAlright,â you say, stretching slightly as you stand. âIâm gonna shower and watch the stream from bed.âÂ
You glance toward Bokuto and Akaashi.Â
âYou guys can stay as long as you want. Just lock up before you leave so I donât get murdered in my sleep.âÂ
âCreepy,â Kenma comments.Â
You shrug, looking back toward the phone.Â
âLove you, Testu and Kenma.âÂ
Kuroo grins. âLove you too!â
Kenma mutters a quiet, âlove you.âÂ
Warmth blooms softly in your chest. You lean down next, hugging your friends.Â
âLove you. See you tomorrow.âÂ
Akaashi murmurs his I love you too softly against your shoulder, while Bokuto practically yells his directly into your ear.Â
Later, freshly showered and tucked into bed, your laptop rests open beside you. Kenmaâs steam plays quietly in the background while Kuroo screams dramatically every few minutes during the horror game. You smile sleepily into your pillow and as laughter and the familiar voices of two of your best friends fill the dark room, you fall asleep feeling cozy.Â
a few weeks later
Today is a rest day for both players and staff.Â
You know, in fact youâve studied, that rest is essential for athletes, just as important as training itself, if not more. Recovery days lower injury risk, aid in soft tissue repair, regulate hormones like cortisol, dopamine, norepinephrine⌠you know all the physiology and neurology behind it. But still, that doesnât mean youâre good at actually resting.Â
Even during the off-season break youâd spent most mornings pacing your apartment aimlessly before eventually giving up and going to the gym or on a run. You never really know what to do with yourself when volleyball/work isnât involved somehow.Â
Your brain doesnât shut off easilyâit likes movement, activity, routine, schedules. You like having purpose.Â
Todayâs free day has been planned thoroughly by Bokuto and Akaashi, who always insist youâre not third-wheeling because âouâre literally one of our favorite peopleâ and they donât mind you being there with them.Â
You argued, of course. In turn, they ignored you.Â
So now, after being violently awakened by Bokuto screaming in your ear âget up or weâre going to miss the good picnic spots!â, you find yourself in Nakanoshima Park on a sunny Saturday midday.Â
Itâs niceâcrowded, yesâbut nice nevertheless. Children run freely through the grass while their parents watch them with small smiles on their faces, or cameras pointed at them. Teens crowd around card games and board games with konbini snacks or toss around a football or volleyball around. Elderly couples sit together reading newspapers under the shade.Â
You sigh contentedly as you stretch out across the picnic blanket beneath the shade of a tree, eyes slipping closed for a moment while the happy couple wander off toward a nearby convenience store. The breeze is soft, the distant chatter is soothing and for once, your mind feels quieted off. A few minutes later, you feel someone sit beside you, probably Akaashi looking for some shade too. But when you open your eyes, already turning to ask what they bought, you sit up immediatelyâbecuase itâs not Akaashi. Itâs not Bokuto either.Â
Itâs Kuroo.Â
You blink once, twice, trying to determine if you fell asleep and youâre dreaming. You know itâs not a dream when Kuroo grins lazily, so familiar and warm that it cannot be replicated accurately in dreams.Â
âHey, bug.âÂ
âTetsu?!âÂ
You practically throw yourself at him, arms wrapping tightly around his shoulders. He lets out a startled huff but catches you easily, laughing as his own arms close around you. Itâs a cute moment before you pull back just enough to smack his shoulders.Â
âWhat the fuck?!âÂ
Kuroo rubs his shoulder.Â
âThis is how you greet me? Giving me a false sense of security with a hug and then launching a sneak attack?âÂ
You laugh brightly, still a little in disbelief.Â
âWhat are you doing here?âÂ
He shrugs easily.Â
âMissed you.â A grin pulls at his mouth. âSo I convinced my boss to send me here for the Adlers match. Promotional stuff, you know. Theyâre hot. The JVA would be stupid not to capitalize on that.â
You snort, but unfortunately, heâs right. They are hot and volleyball fans are terrifyingly dedicatedâphoto cards, chibis, posters, editsâyouâve seen it all.Â
âSo you planned this with Kou and Keiji.âÂ
Kuroo confirms with a nod.Â
âI wanted to slip into your apartment and scare you awake like you did to me that one time in university,â he says bitterly, still not over it. âBut they wouldnât let me.
Then quieter-
âSaid youâd probably punch me âaccidentallyâ.Â
You snort loudly.Â
âNice quotation marks.âÂ
You glance around.Â
âWhere are they, by the way?âÂ
Kuroo stretches out beside you, settling comfortably onto the blanket with his hands behind his head.Â
âSince youâre now in excellent company, they went on an actual lunch date. Theyâll meet us later.âÂ
You smile softly.Â
âGood. They deserved one. I kept telling them.â
You settle back down beside him, shoulders brushing slightly. Itâs like no time has passed at all since the last time you saw him.Â
âKenma couldnât make it?âÂ
Kuroo sighs, shaking his head.Â
âTurns out being a CEO involves actual work.âÂ
You frown.Â
âAh.âÂ
A quiet beat passes between you before you turn your head slightly toward him.Â
âHe happy?âÂ
His expression softens immediately, the way it does when he talks about Kenma.Â
âHe is.â
You smile.Â
âGood.âÂ
For a while, the two of you just exist together in the best way possible. Comfortable silence as the park ambient noise fills it, shared space that is never too wide (Kuroo is a cuddler), its familiarity that only comes after so many years of actual, genuine friendship.
Then Kurooâs stomach growls loud enough to interrupt the peace and you burst out laughing.Â
âAlright,â you say, sitting up. âLetâs eat, you giant baby.âÂ
You pull the picnic basket closer and start unpacking the food the three of you prepared earlier that morning and conversation slips naturally into place after that. You notice little things while he talks your ear off.Â
The way his haircut is a little more tame now compared to your university days. The familiar rise and fall of his shoulders when he laughs. How his grin softens whenever heâs genuinely listening instead of teasing.Â
You hope you always notice things like that about the people you love.Â
Life feels different now than it did back then, definitely busier too. Conversations have changed too. Now itâs sponsors, schedules, plans for the future, traveling and work. Not complaining about professors, cafeteria food tier lists or deciding whether karaoke night was worth skipping class the next morning.Â
(you and Kuroo never skipped)Â
And it most definitely isnât furious rants in chemistry tutoring sessions. You remember those especially well.Â
They usually went something like this:Â
years ago at a cafe near campus, approximately seven p.m.Â
Kuroo is already sitting at the table by the window when you arrive. The two of you love this place because all the menu items have terrible puns for names.Â
Youâre late. Again.Â
He looks up just in time to see you storm through the tables like youâre seconds away from spontaneous combustion. You drop your bag onto the empty chair and collapse into the seat across from him with an aggressive huff.Â
âThat fucker is seriously the worst,â you say immediately.Â
Kuroo calmly takes a sip of coffee.Â
âHello to you too.â
âLike yeah, heâs smart,â you continue, ignoring him like he never spoke at all, âbut that single redeemable quality he may have is hidden behind his stupidity and complete lack of empathy. Seriously, how is anyone friends with that guy?âÂ
Kuroo hums.Â
âThat was a little harsh.â
âI wouldnât wish him on my worst enemy.â You pause, now speaking lower as you come to a realization. â...actually he might be my worst enemy, so that logic isnât sound.âÂ
That gets a little snort out of him.Â
âSo,â he says carefully, âwhat did Iwaizumi do this time?âÂ
You glare at him like the question itself offended you. Which it kind of did.Â
âI had that presentation today, remember?âÂ
Kuroo nods.Â
âWell obviously we had peer review afterward and that asshole said my recovery research was âgood in theory but had weak practical application'.âÂ
Kuroo blinks.Â
â...thatâs what youâre mad about?âÂ
âYes!âÂ
âBecauseâŚ?âÂ
âUgh! Because he said it so casually!â you complain. âLike it didnât take me days to compile everything. He knows how hard research papers are!âÂ
You slump farther into your chair.Â
âAnd he said it in front of everyone.âÂ
A beat.Â
âAnd he mightâve been right,â you mutter bitterly.Â
Kuroo watches you for a second longer, then smiles slightly.Â
âAh.âÂ
You narrow your eyes immediately.Â
âWhat does âahâ mean?âÂ
âNothing."
âThat was a measured âawââ
His grin turns sly.Â
âItâs interesting.âÂ
âWhat is? Being an asshole?âÂ
âThat you seem to care about his opinion more than anyone elseâs."
You point at him.Â
âDonât psychoanalyze me because you took one psych elective.âÂ
âIt was three, actually.âÂ
âYouâre insufferable.âÂ
âAnd yet,â he says, tapping the notebook between you, âyou still come to me for help.âÂ
You stare at him.Â
âDonât throw that in my face. You know chemistry is out to kill me."
âMhm. Sure.âÂ
You roll your eyes as you start getting your materials out of your bag. Thereâs a silent moment before he casually says-
âIwaizumi is actually not that bad."
You stare at him in betrayal.Â
âWhat.âÂ
âHe was really nice in high school.â
âI donât care. This is university.âÂ
âHe was Seijohâs ace.âÂ
âOh, is that why he has a superiority complex?âÂ
Kuroo laughs.Â
âIâm serious! People liked him.â
âThatâs concerning.âÂ
âHe has friends and everything.â
âPeople should check on themselves.âÂ
Before Kuroo can get another word in about how apparently amazing your enemy is, you point at him.Â
âFrom now on, we donât say his name."
Kuroo deadpans.Â
âWhat.âÂ
âHe doesnât have a name anymore. He doesnât deserve one.â
You lean across the table and muster the most serious and threatening expression you can. You think you look pretty scary.Â
âIf we must refer to him, we call him âyou know whoââÂ
Thereâs a microsecond of silence before Kuroo bursts into full-body laughter.Â
âYeah, I know.â he wheezes. âThatâs the problem.âÂ
You cross your arms stubbornly.
âYou agree or not? I canât have my tutor be a traitor.âÂ
âDid you just demote me from âfriendâ to âtutorâ?â
âYes. Youâre back to âfriendâ when you agree.â
âOh my god, I agree.â he laughs. âYouâre way more entertaining than any other person Iâve studied with.
You finally open your notebook with a dramatic sigh.Â
âI know. Itâs tiring, being this fascinating.â
âYour constant suffering is whatâs fascinating."
âTraitor.âÂ
âDumbass,â he says, and you think you notice thereâs a hint of fondness there.Â
Back then, you genuinely thought university rivalry and chemistry was the most exhausting thing life would ever throw at you. Looking back now, it almost feels small, and almost funny. Almost because you havenât thought about Iwaizumi Hajime in a long time. Almost because that man is your forever enemy.Â
But your life is good now. Full and busy and fulfilling in ways a younger you could only dream of. Laying there beneath the summer sun beside your best friend, listening to the sounds of Osaka around you, you feel happy.Â
But still, hours later still in the shade as Kuroo naps beside you, your thoughts wander for a moment to him.Â
years ago, second year of university.Â
Your morning starts terribly. Actually no, it was fine until your roommate threw their coffee all over your favorite hoodie, which immediately ruins everything.
âYou bumped into me!â you complain while desperately trying to scrub the stain in the sink.Â
Your roommate, who you have a nice relationship with (most of the time) looks completely unbothered.Â
âItâs not the end of the world.âÂ
âThat hoodie deserves better than this cruel end.âÂ
Unfortunately, the universe continues conspiring against you after that. This time itâs the rain, and normally you love the rain, how the pellets sound as they hit your window, how it makes you want to cuddle up in bed with a movie.Â
Today, however, it's cold and miserable and actively mocking you while your stained hoodie sits abandoned in your dorm room.Â
Then, because people canât do their outdoor training, the gym is packedâlike completely packed. And of course, he is here. Of fucking course. Fucking Iwaizumi, already using the equipment you wanted. Sweaty and focused and looking entirely too smug for someone just lifting weights.Â
You narrow your eyes and somehow he senses you and glances up briefly. And the bastard smirks! Like actually smirks!Â
You turn around instantly and walk right back out before you commit a felony today. You could probably go to jail if you beat the smirk off his face with that same dumbbell, right?Â
Right. So youâll come back later. Like a peasant.Â
So overall? Awful morning. But at least, at least, you have your favorite lecture in two hours. Sports rehabilitation 201 with Professor Kento, the only one on campus who makes lectures worthwhile.Â
Youâve been actually looking forward to it.Â
Which means, naturally, that the universe ruins that too. You wonder who you pissed off for this bad karma.Â
âClass is cancelled?â someone near the lecture hall says excitedly.Â
âNo way, really?âÂ
âYes! Professor Kento is sick!â
You stare at the classroom door in betrayal. No.Â
No no no no. You had notes prepared!
Now youâre sitting alone in the cafeteria with your lunch and a podcast playing through your headphones loud enough to discourage anyone from attempting conversation with you. Youâre not in the mood. You stab aggressively at your food.Â
Something in the universe makes you look up at the cafeteria doors as they open up. And unfortunately, there he is again.Â
You narrow your eyes as Iwaizumi walks inside beside one of his friends (that he must have paid to be his friend) laughing about something. He doesnât notice you, but you do. Because apparently today is the day for all things annoying.Â
His stupid hair looks damp from the rain, or a shower.Â
His stupid smile is relaxed, which is unfair.Â
And his stupid shirt stretches across his stupid biceps very nicely.Â
You huff sharply and turn the volume on your headphones up to the maximum because you are not going to spend your lunch watching him and ignoring the amazing athlete on your podcast.Â
Absolutely not!Â
Which is why itâs incredibly irritating when your eyes accidentally drift toward him two minutes later.Â
The next few days slipped by almost without notice. The first days of preseason always carried the same rhythm. Early mornings, assessments, meetings with the team, crew, sponsors, lots of taping, reviewing footage, rehabilitation plans⌠reminding everyone that mobility is just as important as scrimmage.Â
It was almost comforting, how quickly volleyball became your world once preseason was in full swing.Â
(not that it had ever really stopped)Â
Thereâs always another article to read before bed, another rehabilitation protocol, another online seminar that becomes your entertainment as you ignore the movie playing in the background.
Bokuto and Kuroo had caught you three separate times falling asleep on your couch with your laptop balanced on your chest. You pretended not to notice.Â
Having Akaashi around helped too because after yours and Kurooâs heart to heart, you decided rest can be productive too. You read on opposite ends of the couch while he edits manga panels. You go on late evening walks, cook dinner together while Bokuto and Kuroo sing in the background. Sometimes itâs just, the both of you sitting in comfortable silence.Â
Today, however, there isnât much room for said silence.Â
Today is the first preseason match. Against EJP Raijin. Which means friends (that for roughly three hours, became the enemy) and even family. You smile as you walk through the training facility.Â
Youâll see faces that have woven into your life through the years, today theyâd be on opposite sides of the net, but tomorrow youâd probably all be sharing dinner somewhere.Â
Thatâs simply the beauty of volleyball.Â
You step into your office first, setting your coffee beside your laptop before checking everything you need for today one last time. Emergency medical bag, extra tape, ice packs, bandages, heat compressions. Check, check and check.Â
Satisfied, you grab your clipboard before heading toward Coach Fosterâs office and tapping your thumb three times.Â
âCome in.âÂ
You slip inside. Coach Foster looks up from the whiteboard spread on his table while Kaito leans back in his chair, greeting you with a smile with a half-filled cup of coffee.Â
âMorning, gentlemen.âÂ
âMorning.âÂ
Coach nods toward the tactical board. You step closer, studying it while sitting down on the empty chair.Â
âWhat do you think?âÂ
Itâs balancedâgiving the newer recruits meaningful minutes while keeping the usual members on court to maintain it. You nod.Â
âI like it.â
âYouâd change anything?âÂ
You consider it for another few seconds before shaking your head.Â
âNo. if anything, Iâd keep an eye on Bokutoâs jumps if he gets carried away.âÂ
Kaito laughs.Â
âSo⌠five minutes in?â
You smile.Â
âThree.âÂ
Coach Foster chuckles.Â
âIâll let you stop him.â
âGood luck with that,â Kaito mutters into his mug.Â
Coach leans back with a satisfied grin.Â
âI appreciate your input. Both of you.â
The words were simple, but what they carried made something warm settle inside your chest. Not every organization treats athletic trainers as valuable for this part of the conversation. Some viewed you as an instrument for when injuries appeared (and blamed you for them).Â
But Coach Foster and Kaito never had. From your first month with the team heâd ask your opinion and listened to it. Trusted it.Â
Someday, youâll get used to it.Â
Trying to calm the team before and during warm-ups proved literally impossible.Â
âYouâd think theyâd never seen each other before,â Kaito sighed.Â
âItâs been too long for some of them,â you answered.Â
âThey saw each other three weeks ago.â
âYep. Exactly.âÂ
The Raijin bus pulled into the parking lot and any remaining hope of a professional, disciplined team disappeared completely.Â
Atsumu was the first across the court, practically launching himself toward Suna.Â
âYou finally showed up, Sunarin.âÂ
âYouâre getting awfully heated, Tsumu.âÂ
(He wasnât, but Suna knows how to push his buttons)Â
âHah? Heated? Iâm chill.â
âMhm.â
âIâm chill!âÂ
âIf you say it enough times maybe itâll become true.âÂ
âI hope Samu dumps you.âÂ
âSure.âÂ
âYou could at least pretend to care.âÂ
âI care,â Suna says, with the blankest stare ever.Â
âI hate ya."
âNo you donât, Tsumu.â
â... no.âÂ
A few meters awayâ
âKiyo!âÂ
Komori nearly tackles Sakusa into a hug, which he accepts with practiced (and fake) resignation.
âHi, Komori.âÂ
âHow are you?â
âIâm good, how are you?âÂ
âIâm great! Did you end up making my curry?âÂ
âI did?âÂ
âAnd?âÂ
âI added pickled onions."
Komori gasps dramatically, eyebrows rising.
âThat actually sounds amazing.âÂ
âIt was.â
On the other side of the gym-
âWashio!âÂ
Washio smiles the moment Bokuto comes barreling towards him.Â
âBokuto-san.âÂ
âWow! Youâve gotten stronger!âÂ
âSo have you.â
âYou staying tonight? Drinks?â
Washio smiles apologetically.Â
âWeâre heading back after the match.Â
âAwwâŚâÂ
âNext time."
âPromise?âÂ
Who could resist those big golden eyes?
âPromise. Iâll tell Akaashi-kun as well.âÂ
Watching all of them greet one another never fails at making you smile. Professional rivals, friends, family, former teammates, current opponents. Somehow all of those things coexist without contradiction.Â
The match itself was exactly what we expected. Explosive, experimental and fast. Both coaching staffs spent more time observing than trying to winânew rotations, offensive tactics, defensive ideas. Some worked as planned, others crashed and burned, but no one seemed truly bothered. Thatâs why preseason is important.Â
Coach Foster stood beside you with his clipboard while Kaito occasionally leaned over your shoulder to compare notes or point things out.Â
âThe rookieâs reading is late.â
âSakusaâs shoulder looks good.âÂ
God, you love this job.Â
An hour later, MSBY took the match two sets to one. Everyone looks exhausted and incredibly happy.Â
You are gathering your equipment when something catches your attention. Bokuto and Hinata are talking quietly⌠way too hushed voices after a win. Your stomach immediately tightens. You cross the court.Â
âWhat happened?âÂ
Both of them look up.Â
âWhich one of you is hurt?âÂ
The concern in your voice makes Bokuto blink.Â
âWeâre fine.âÂ
âI donât believe either of you.âÂ
Hinata laughs nervously.Â
âReally!âÂ
âI want you both in my office after stretching.âÂ
Bokuro rests a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
âWeâre okay, bug.âÂ
You search his face. Bokuto had never learned how to lie and if something hurts, his entire body gives him away. So, you find nothingânot even a flicker.Â
Your shoulders relax.Â
âOkay,â You point between them anyway. âStretch properly.â
They nod.Â
âIce anything that feels tight. Weâll do treatment tomorrow.âÂ
âYes, maâam.âÂ
Only then did you let yourself give them a small smile. Maybe you worry too much, but then again, it is your job.Â
That evening, after everyone had gone home and the training facility fell quiet, you locked your office before heading toward the parking lot.Â
Another successful day with pages filled with notes and another step towards the season.Â
You had no way of knowing that in just two days, another preseason match would turn your routine upside down.Â
chapter 2: i get by with a little help from my friends
That same night, your apartment feels even warmer than usual. Maybe itâs the familiarity, maybe itâs the fact that (almost) all your favorite people are under one roof with you again. Dinner plates are still abandoned on your kitchen counter next to the sink because none of you could be bothered to wash them yet. And now the four of you are sprawled across the living room with half-finished drinks and growing amounts of stupidity.Â
Well. Mostly Kurooâs stupidity.Â
Bokuto only had one beer, insisting he didnât want to drink much now that preseason started. As his athletic trainer, you were proud, as one of his best friends you were silently hoping heâd relax a little more. Itâs a paradox really.Â
Kuroo tried bribing him twice, but failed both times.Â
You and Akaashi, however, are absolutely lightweight drinkers, which means youâre pleasantly tipsy and sitting side-by-side on the floor, shoulders pressed together while the other two occupy the couch. Your face feels insanely warm, courtesy of the overhead light, the alcohol and the laughs because Kuroo is currently controlling your laptop while a giant tier list titled:
HOTTEST V. LEAGUE PLAYERSÂ
Fills your television screen.Â
It might be a little unprofessional, but these are your best friends, not league staff! Who cares?Â
You sigh dramatically and lean your head against Akaashiâs shoulder.Â
âWhat about Osamu? Can we rank him instead of Atsumu?âÂ
Akaashi sighs dreamily. âOsamu is S-tier.â
Bokuto gasps in mock betrayal, âbaby, does Sunarin know about your crush on his boyfriend?âÂ
Akaashi turns to him calmly.Â
âHe does.â A beat. âWeâve bonded over it.âÂ
Thenâ
âWe bond over you too.âÂ
You immediately exchange identical looks of alarm with Kuroo. Shit. You know exactly where this is going. Bokuto leans forward from the couch toward Akaashiâs form on the floor slowly, golden eyes turning dark and hazy immediately. Akaashi looks up at him with equally dangerous eyes.Â
Oh fuck no. Not in your living room.Â
Bokuto murmurs quietly. âOh yeah?âÂ
Akaashi smirks and it makes him look like a siren, singing a song only for his preyâs ears.Â
You point at them.
âOkay! Nightâs over before this turns into a porno starring two cuckolds.â
Kuroo smirks lazily from the couch.
âI wouldnât mind.â
Bokuto snaps out of his horny daze and instantly throws an arm around him.Â
âI missed ya, Kubro!â
Kuroo grins. âMissed you more, Bokubro.â Then he wiggles his eyebrows suggestively.
âWhat do you say we ditch these two and head to bed together?âÂ
Bokuto giggles loudly and beside you, Akaashi sighs deeply. âYou love provoking me.â
Kuroo beams. âI really do.â
You snort a laugh and carefully push yourself upright, wobbling slightly before steadying yourself against the coffee table.Â
âOkay, okay. Stop fighting." You point toward the door. âKou, Keiji, go have sex in your bed."
Then toward Kurooâ
âTetsu, letâs go to bed.âÂ
Kuroo raises both eyebrows.Â
âThatâs the best invitation youâve ever given me.â
You roll your eyes fondly as Akaashi finally stands too, reaching automatically for Bokutoâs hand. The sight softens something in your chest. Routine. Comfort. Love.Â
As you close the front door behind Koutarou and Keiji, you immediately witness Bokuto trying, and failing, to walk in a straight line while Akaashi clings to him attempting to kiss him every three seconds or so. Akaashi gets unusually clingy when tipsy, which is truly adorable. But unfortunately, it also means he gets very obviously horny. Tonight (like all nights when this happens) Bokuto looks delighted by the development.Â
âBaby,â Bokuto laughs breathlessly as Akaashi grabs his face again, âwe gotta walk firstââ
Akaashi ignores him completely. You snort loudly. Beside you, Kuroo leans closer to watch too, equally entertained.Â
âThey never change.âÂ
You laugh.Â
âNo. Horny animals.â You throw him a sideways glance. âAnd youâre no better, Tetsurou.âÂ
Kuroo smiles immediately.Â
âYouâre friends with my boyfriend, can you blame me?âÂ
You sigh deeply.Â
âNo. You're all annoyingly attractive. People congratulate me on having a hot friend group all the time.âÂ
Kuroo smirks. âAs they should.â His eyes flick over to you briefly. âYouâre hot too. Even with those giant, dark circles under your eyes.âÂ
You huff. âShut up.âÂ
Kuroo laughs loudly before his expression turns thoughtful.Â
âWhenâs the last time you got laid?âÂ
You freeze.Â
â...what?âÂ
âIt's just a question.â
You open your mouth confidently, and then immediately realize you genuinely donât know. You can't remember the last time.Â
â...uhhhhh."
Kurooâs eyebrows rise slowly. You start counting backwards.Â
âJune? No waitââ You grimace. âMaybe April?âÂ
Kuroo groans dramatically, head falling backward.Â
âYou canât even remember?âÂ
You burst into laughter. âSorry Iâm not having mind-blowing sex like the rest of you apparently are!âÂ
âThatâs not the point,â Kuroo says immediately and something softer slips into his expression, and itâs something you know pretty well. Concern, the kind that comes from years of knowing each other too well.Â
He studies you for a second before sighing.
âLetâs clean up first,â he says. âThen weâll talk once weâre in pajamas.â
You nod immediately.Â
âDeal. I love my pajamas.âÂ
Kuroo snorts.Â
âWhat? Tell me something better than coming home and getting into comfy pjâs.âÂ
âYouâre ridiculous.âÂ
âAnd yet,â you say smugly while grabbing empty beer bottles from the coffee table, âyou came to Osaka just to hang out with me. And you missed me.â You sing-song.Â
Kuroo points at you accusingly.Â
âDonât use my affection against me!âÂ
The apartment is quiet, but never completely silentâoutside, there are distant cars, an occasional muffled conversation and the ruffle of a nearby trees as the night gets cooler.Â
You and Kuroo are lying side by side on your bed. The lights are off, enveloping the room in darkness, the only illumination coming from the streetlights filtering weakly through the curtains. Neither of you are asleep, even though itâs been a while since you washed up and tucked into bed. You can tell heâs awake because of the occasional shift beside you. The conversation from earlier lingers between you and eventually, he sighs.Â
âYou know I wasnât asking about sex because I want to intrude on your sex life, right?âÂ
You snort.Â
âThatâs disappointing. You seemed pretty invested.â
âIâm invested in bullying you.âÂ
âAh, real friendship.â
âIndeed.â
A comfortable silence follows. Thenâ
âBug.â
You already know whatâs coming, so your initial instinct is to sigh, a little louder than you wanted.Â
âTetsu.â
His voice stays soft.
âWhenâs the last time you took a day off?âÂ
You groan.Â
âOh my god.â
âWhat?âÂ
âYou too?â
âYes.â
You throw an arm over your face.
âCan everybody stop acting like Iâm seconds away from collapse?âÂ
âNo.â
âTetsurou.â
âNo.â
âIâm fine.â
âSure. I know.âÂ
âDo you?âÂ
âI do.â
You turn your head toward him even though you can barely see him in the dark.Â
âTetsu.â
âBug.â
The matching tone makes you roll your eyes. You stare back at the ceiling.Â
âI eat. I sleepââ
âBarely.â
âI exerciseââ
âBecause itâs your job.â
âI have friends.â
âThank god.âÂ
You groan again. His voice remains frustratingly gentle.
âYou know why everyone likes you?âÂ
You blink, not expecting the question. He doesnât wait for an answer.
âYouâre kind, youâre smart. You care about people, youâd bend over backwards for any of your friends. Hell, for strangers too.âÂ
You squeeze your eyes shut, caught completely off guard.Â
âTetsurouââ
âBut youâre terrible at extending that same kindness to yourself.âÂ
The words land harder than you want them to, so you bristle, getting defensive, becoming agitated. Because everyone keeps saying it or hinting towards it. Bokuto, Akaashi, Coach Foster, and now Kuroo. You sit up slightly.Â
âI take care of myself. I worked my ass off to get here.â
His expression doesnât change, you can feel it even in the dark, his calmness and patience.Â
âI know.
âThis is where Iâve always wanted to be.â
âI know.â
âSo why does everyone keep acting like itâs a problem that I care about my job?âÂ
âItâs not.âÂ
His answer is immediate, with no hesitation or judgement. You falter. Kuroo turns his head slightly towards you.Â
âYou love your job, you love volleyball, and you love helping people.â
Your throat tightens slightly.Â
âYeah.â
âAnd thatâs why Iâm worried."
The irritation drains out of you in waves, little by little as your body settlesâyour eyebrows unfurrow, your shoulders come down from where theyâve been tense. Kuroo isnât accusing you of anything, heâs not judging you. Heâs just worried.Â
âI know youâre exactly where youâve always wanted to be.â He says quietly. âAnd Iâm so proud of you for it.âÂ
You swallow.Â
âBut there has to be a balance. Because if there isnâtâŚ"
He pauses, sighing softly.Â
âYouâre going to burn out.â
You donât answer because part of you, deep down maybe, knows heâs right. You just donât know what to do about it. After a moment, you answer, voice barely above a whisperâ
âI donât know how.â
The admission feels strange, foreign as the words come out. Youâve never felt so small and vulnerable, you hate having to admit that youâre clueless about something. But beside you, Kuroo understands. Of course he does.Â
âI figured.â
You let out a quiet laugh.Â
âSo helpful.â
âI know right.â
You bump his shoulder lightly, he bumps yours back before sayingâ
âYou donât have to figure it out alone.â
You stare at the ceiling, listening.Â
âYouâve got Bokuto. Heâd fight three bears for you, remember?â
You nod.Â
âAkaashi.â
You nod again.Â
âKenma. The team. Your family.â
You hum.Â
âAnd me.â
The silence that follows is not uncomfortable, but the complete opposite, itâs full of real concern coming from your best friend. Full of years of friendship, of tutoring sessions, road trips, late-night calls, and achieving dreams together. You donât say anything, you donât really need to, you think. Instead, you slowly drift closer beneath the blankets until your shoulder presses lightly against his. A silent answer. Thank you. I heard you. Which Kuroo immediately understands and after a second, he gently tilts his head until it rests against yours.Â
You close your eyes and for the first time in a while, you let yourself believe that maybe you donât have to do everything alone. After all, you have a team, actually two, to count on.Â
Two days before the Adlers match, the MSBY training facility is already buzzing at nine in the morning. Not because of practice or a match. Not even because weâre watching a game tape. Itâs worse.Â
Itâs because of media day. Which, in your professional opinion, is significantly more dangerous than any exercise you could possibly ask them to do.
You sit on one of the folding chairs set up near the court with a large coffee in hand, watching a small army of JVA staff move equipment around. Big cameras, blinding lights, clip-on microphones and a big wheeled monitor.
Youâre suddenly glad youâre only babysitting because the entire thing somehow looks more exhausting than a five-set match.
You take another sip of coffee.
The boys are finishing up their showers after a light workout, leaving you with twenty merciful, quiet minutes.Â
tetsu:Â how dare you abandon me
you:Â i left you my car
tetsu :Â and yet iâm still alone
you:Â a real tragedy, whoâs fault is that?Â
tetsu:Â you have no compassion
you:Â iâm an athletic trainerÂ
tetsu:Â i knew you were gonna say that!Â
You roll your eyes. Before you can answer again, a familiar voice calls your name. You glance up to see Coach Foster walking towards his office as he toward the general direction of the locker rooms.
âYour children are almost ready.â
You immediately sigh.
âTheyâre your children too.â
âNo.â He takes a sip of his coffee, âIâm the coach.â
You narrow your eyes.
âAnd Iâm what?â
âRight now, the babysitter.â
You flip him off and he just laughs and keeps walking. Imagine flipping off your boss! A few minutes later, the locker room doors burst open. As expected, Bokuto appears first, followed closely by Atsumu and Hinata. And finally Sakusa, who already looks tired of all of them. Poor Kiyoomi still has to survive a media day.Â
âGood morning!â Hinata beams.
âIt is still too early,â Atsumu complains.
âYouâve been awake since five.â
âThatâs different.â
âYou woke me up, Atsumu-san.â
âYa should thank me because the sunrise was perfect.âÂ
Sakusa walks past them.
âNo one should thank you for anything.â
Atsumu gasps, hand darting to cover his left pectoral in fake dramatics. You take another sip of coffee. Business as usual.
The media team finishes setting up shortly afterward. The concept for todayâs interview is apparently a Wired-style autocomplete interview. The setup looks pretty coolâFour stools for them to sit in the middle of the court, lights on and the board with questions generated from internet searches.
Lots of opportunities for chaos, which means the production team is thrilled and the boys even more so. The director, a woman named Suki, claps her hands.
âOkay, everyone!â
The boys immediately turn toward her.
âWeâll do a quick rundown first.â
She points toward the stools.
âSit wherever you want.â
The boys nod eagerly and move quickly towards the stools with obedience. You hide your smile behind your coffee.
A few minutes later theyâre all settledâmicrophones attached, unruly hairs fixed as final camera checks are done.
They look great- professional, relaxed, and comfortable- which is exactly what sponsors and viewers love.
The court itself has become the backdrop, with the gleaming, polished floor with the giant MSBY logo in the middle and banners hanging overhead. Apparently it creates âatmosphere.â Though Volleyball players could probably be interviewed in a parking lot and still look cool.
Kuroo finally arrives a few minutes before filming, just as you knew would happen. The moment he spots you, he winks. You immediately give him a thumbs down. He grins, then heads off to speak with his JVA crew.
A few minutes later, once everything is finalized, he drops into the empty chair beside yours.
âMissed me?â
You donât even look at him.
âNo.â
âI shouldâve known. You abandoned me.â
âI left you my car.â
âThat doesnât mean shit to me.â
âWell, at least you made it on time.â
âBarely.â
You finally glance sideways. Heâs holding the coffee thermos you so gracefully left him, red tie perfectly tied and hair suspiciously well-styled.
âLooking corporate today.â
He smiles proudly. âI know.â
âDisgusting, but somehow handsome.â
He doesnât even bat an eyelid at your jab. âThank you.â
The director calls for quiet and the camera operators move into position. The interviewer, Suki, steps into frame.
The boys immediately straighten.
Well. Three of them do, Atsumu is still fidgeting with the stool height.Â
You hear Kuroo sigh beside you.
âTheyâre going to be a nightmare.â
You smile into your coffee.
âYep.â
On court, Suki beams at the camera, signaling to another woman behind the camera. The red recording light flickers on.
The interview begins.
Immediately, the four players sit up straighter on their stools.
Hinata is already grinning, Bokuto looks excited enough to explode, Sakusa looks like heâs questioning every decision that led him here and Atsumu looks smug already. Suki smiles brightly at the camera.
âWhenever youâre ready, guys.â
The four of them nod.
They exchange a glance.
Then:
âHello! Weâre partââ
The intro immediately falls apart by them being totally out of sync. Hinata starts laughing first, Bokuto starts laughing because Hinata is laughing. Atsumu laughs too, leaning slightly to an amused Sakusa. You hear Kuroo sigh beside you.
âThey didnât even make it to three words.â
You snort into your coffee.
On court, Hinata claps his hands together.
âLetâs try that again!â
This timeâ
âHello! Weâre part of the MSBY Black Jackals and weâre here for the Wired Autocomplete Interview!â
âHey hey hey!â Bokuto adds.
The crew applauds. Suki laughs.
âPerfect. Welcome, guys. Why donât you start us off, Atsumu-san?â
Atsumu nods immediately and a board comes flying toward him from off-camera. He catches it cleanly.
âIâve only seen those for K-pop and J-pop idols and stuff.â
Hinata immediately perks up.
âCan we see one?â
Atsumuâs expression changes instantly.
âActually, I donât think thatâs necesââ
He notices a crew member already pulling up a video.
âOh. You already have one.â
The crew wheels a monitor closer and a tiktok edit starts playing. It grabs everyoneâs undivided attention immediately. Itâs very quiet now. The video opens with a slow-motion clip of Atsumu serving. Then another, then a close-up interview shot, followed by a dramatic, surprise spike. Then somehow another close-up.
Everything is edited to a slowed-down absurdly intimate song. So it makes it seem more like a thrist trap/edit than a normal edit.Â
You may be cringing but objectively, the transitions are smooth. The slow-motion should probably be illegal, though.Â
You hear Kuroo choke on his coffee beside you.
âOh my god.â
On court, Bokuto stares. Hinata stares. Sakusa looks mildly alarmed.
Atsumu watches himself for several seconds.
Then:
âOh damn.â
A pause.
âI look pretty good, donât I?â
Atsumu points towards the cameras.Â
âTo whoever did that, I like you.â
âYou look so cool, Atsumu-san!â Hinata says, quickly bringing his hand up to high five his teammate, making the entire crew erupt into laughter.
The crew swaps boards and a staff member tosses the next one to Sakusa. He catches it smoothly with one hand and immediately turns toward Atsumu with a look in his face that very clearly says:Â see? I can do it too.Â
Atsumu, grown adult that he is, sticks his tongue out at him. Sakusa ignores him and the crew bursts out laughing. You hear Kuroo snort beside you.Â
âTheyâre five years old.âÂ
âYouâre one to talk.â
âFair enough.âÂ
On court, Sakusa angles the board toward himself and peels off the first question, reading it aloud.Â
â'Why can Sakusa Kiyoomi bend his wrists so far back?'âÂ
âOh, thatâs a good one,â Hinata says. Sakusa nods in agreement.Â
âItâs because I have joint hypermobility, or hyperlaxity.â Then, because he is incapable of leaving important things half-explained, he continuesâ
âMy joints can move beyond the normal end range.â
Atsumu immediately points.Â
âShow the camera, Omi!â
Sakusa obliges and bends both wrists backwards, the tips of his fingers basically touching his forearm. You laugh at the reactions from the crewâsome of them cringe and wince, others are amazed. One camera operator lets his true feelings out with an âoh, absolutely not.âÂ
Hinata laughs, Bokuto always looks fascinated by Omiâs âparty trickâ and Atsumu looks smug. Sakusa simply returns his wrist to normal.Â
âAnyway,â he peels off the next question.
âWhat are Sakusa Kiyoomiâs hobbies?âÂ
He pauses to think, tilting his head slightly, which makes his curls flop cutely.Â
âI like cleaning.âÂ
Nobody reacts at that, with it being public knowledge from Bokutoâs twitter.Â
âBaking.â
A few eyebrows rise at that, even Kuroo looks mildly impressed.Â
âCrocheting.â
Hinata points at him after that one, âyou like reading!â
Sakusa nods. âAnd listening to podcasts.â
Bokuto beams, pointing towards Sakusa. âOh! We have a room at home that I call The Kiyoomi Hobby Room.âÂ
The crew laughs and Sakusa looks vaguely mortified. ç
âItâs not called that.â
âI call it that! It is called that in my heart.âÂ
Kiyoomi sighs, but lets Bokuto continue, which he does, very proudly.Â
âHe likes doing his hobbies there, except for baking, of course,â then he points towards himself. âAnd thereâs a couch where I lay down and watch movies or shows on my laptop. Also game tapes!âÂ
Kiyoomiâs expression softens at his roommatesâ explanation of the room. And itâs true, youâve witnessed itâKiyoomi sitting in a one person armchair, crocheting with a podcast or audiobook playing in the background while Bokuto lounges on a bigger couch with a plushie, watching a movie.Â
Itâs insanely cute of them. The crew seems to think so too because they let out a collective âawwwwâ.Â
Atsumu watches the interaction with a small smile and from your chair, you notice it againâthe way his eyes soften around him, the way his attention always seems to drift towards him and how genuinely fond he seems.Â
You donât think Atsumu is hiding very well. If anything, heâs failing spectacularly (thankfully, Kiyoomi is none the wiser). Kuroo leans toward you.Â
âHeâs down bad."
âFocus on your job.â
âI am.âÂ
âIs your job gossiping?âÂ
âMy job is volleyball.âÂ
You smile into your cup of coffee.
âWe can gossip about it at home, you menace.â
On court, Sakusa peels off the final question, his eyes scanning it briefly.Â
âIs Sakusa Kiyoomi single?âÂ
You notice Atsumu shift in his seat, itâs so subtle that most people probably wouldnât notice, but you, Bokuto, Hinata and Kuroo definitely do. Sakusa doesnât hesitate.Â
âYes.âÂ
A beat passes, then another as everyone waits for something, anything. Instead, Sakusa simply looks back down at the board, entirely satisfied with his answer.Â
Suki recovers quickly.Â
âAlright!â she claps her hands, âthank you Sakusa-san!âÂ
She points towards the next victim.Â
âItâs Hinata-kunâs turn!âÂ
He beams immediately. A crew member tosses him the board and he catches it cleanly, hugging it against his chest like itâs precious. He peels off the first question.Â
âOh! 'Does Hinata Shoyo hate Kageyama Tobio?'âÂ
Beside you, Kuroo immediately snorts, leaning down to whisper in your ear.Â
âIf hate means being hopelessly obsessed with him, then yes.âÂ
âDonât be mean.â
âIâm not. Tell me itâs not true, then.â
You canât, so you opt on taking a cheeky sip of your coffee, to which Kuroo smirks smugly. On screen, Hinata is already giving the people (even though theyâve heard it a hundred times) the story of their epic friendship/rivalry. He finishes his section to loud laughter from both the crew and his teammates.
Suki smiles.
âAlright! Bokuto-san!âÂ
Bokuto shoots both fists into the air with his usualâ
âHey hey hey!âÂ
A board flies toward him. He catches it, almost drops it, but then recovers at the last second due to his fast reflexes. The crew applauds and he bows dramatically.Â
âThank you, thank you.âÂ
He turns the board toward himself.Â
â'Does Bokuto Koutarou dye his hair?'âÂ
âI do!âÂ
Atsumu, giving the interview his usual flair and charm, clutches his chest dramatically.Â
âI knew it!â
Bokuto laughs. âItâs actually my older sisterâs fault. When I was in middle school, my sister Fumi convinced me itâd be funny if she dyed the tips.â
That is so Fumi, you think to yourself with a small smile.Â
âI thought sheâd make me look terrible. But then I looked insanely cool, so I just never stopped.âÂ
Hinata nods.Â
âIt suits you."
âI know right?!âÂ
Bokuto peels off the next one.Â
âHow many sisters does Bokuto Koutarou have?âÂ
His smile turns a little softer. âI have three. Fumiâs the oldest, then Hana, and Kimuraâs the youngest. And theyâre all amazing! Even though they bullied me growing upâŚ" He pouts, âactually, they still do.â
The crew laughs.Â
âBut theyâre some of my biggest supporters!"
Hinata smiles. âIâve met them! Theyâre really nice.âÂ
Sakusa nods solemnly, âthey are."
The next question isâ
â'Bokuto Koutarou Youtube channel.'âÂ
âOh! It's been a while! I used to vlog sometimesâduring summer break, sometimes on travel days and away games. I just thought itâd be fun. I stopped, but if people still enjoy them, maybe Iâll start again."
A crew member giggles behind the scenes.Â
âI used to watch those.â
âCool!â Bokuto says honestly.Â
The interview rolls onâmore questions, laughter and chaos. That is until Suki reaches the last part of the interview and reads another card.Â
âThis oneâs different.â She looks towards the boys. âDoes MSBY have a female athletic trainer!âÂ
Without hesitation or planning, all four of them point toward you, making you nearly choke on your own saliva.Â
Sakusa speaks next and you know his words come from the heart.Â
âSheâs exceptionally knowledgeable. Notices things most people donât."
Hinata nods. âShe works harder than anyone.âÂ
Bokuto points toward you. âSometimes too hard. Now itâs public knowledge."
You groan audibly.Â
Atsumu grins. âSheâs tiny, but she bosses around an entire room full of stubborn athletes. And we listen. Well, some of us⌠sometimes."
The laughter dies down naturally and Suki notices the shift.Â
âSo, whatâs it like having a woman on staff?âÂ
This time, the answers come slower, the boys becoming more tactful, thoughtful about it. Sakusa speaks first.Â
âIt shouldnât be unusual. Sheâs here because sheâs qualified, not because sheâs a woman.âÂ
Atsumu folds his hands together.Â
âI think people focus too much on that. When she joined, there were headlines about MSBY hirinâ a âfemale trainerâ. He shrugs. âShouldâve written âexcellent trainer.âÂ
Bokuto smiles, a gentle one now. âWe donât care about the gender of our staff, we care that they make us better, that theyâre good people.âÂ
Hinata gestures vaguely toward where youâre sitting, but thankfully the camera doesnât pan over to you now.Â
âShe does and she is, so thatâs enough. And it should be enough for everyone else too.â
You feel something tighten in your chest. No jokes, no teasing, no compliments because they know youâre going to become flusters. Just honesty, support and them being themselves.Â
Suki smiles softly.
âThatâs wonderful, you guys. One last question!â She holds up the card, âwhy should people come watch the Black Jackals this season?âÂ
The mood lifts as Hinata leans towards the camera.Â
âBecause volleyball is awesome!âÂ
Bokuto gestures to all of them.Â
âAnd weâre awesome!âÂ
Atsumu grins smugly, âweâre aiming for that championship.âÂ
The four of them look at one another, smiles and smirks on their faces, eyes full of confidence, heat and a whole lot of desire in their eyes to make their dreams come true. Someone counts down off-camera.Â
Three, two, one. In perfect sync this timeâ
âCome watch our games!âÂ
They bow towards the camera and Bokuto lifts with one last âhey hey hey!â, making the crew burst into applause.
âCut!âÂ
Immediately, the boys start joking around. Microphones come off, people begin moving equipment aroundâyou let out a long breath you hadnât realized youâd been holding.
â... that actually went really well.â
Kuroo hums in agreement. âIt did."
He starts to stand, then pauses, looking down.Â
âSoâŚâÂ
You blink.Â
âWhat?âÂ
He glances down at your hands, and only then you realize that somewhere during the interview (probably during the question about you) youâd reached over without thinking and taken Kurooâs hand. Your hand is still clasped with his. You stare.Â
âOh.âÂ
Kuroo smiles softly.Â
âNow, Iâm flattered, bug, but my heart is taken.âÂ
âI didnât even realizeâŚâ
âI know.âÂ
He gives your hand a gentle squeeze before releasing slowly. You give him a small smile on your own, hoping it emanates what youâre unable to voice out loud.Â

Don't call me a late bloomer
Donât imply to me
And everyone else
That there was a mark
And I missed it
Because bold of you to assume
That I have not already bloomed
That I have not blossomed beautifully
Just because
I preferred leaves to flowers
And grew into my tree
Instead of your rose
In which Crowley is introduced to strawberries by Aziraphale and proceeds to horrify him by eating them whole, popping them in his mouth with the leaves still on and all
He didnât originally mean to mess up the simple art of eating fruit, but they were young and the world was younger, and, well, arenât green things supposed to be healthy for you? Wouldnât do to go getting discorporeated over something preventable like scurvy.
At least, thatâs what he tells Aziraphale as his angel sputters, fingers flexing open and shut as if itching to perform a time-reversing miracle just to stop this heinous act which Crowley has apparently committed.
âCrowley!â he manages to protest, when he has regained the art of speech.
Crowley says nothing, only raises his eyebrows.
âYou canât- You canât just- Thereâs an order to things!â
âAngel-â Crowley groans, reaching for another one and ignoring Aziraphaleâs despairing squawk. âThe universe wonât end because I eat a strawberry the wrong way. Itâd ruin the Great Plan and thatâs, well, ineffable and all that.â
And of course, Aziraphale tuts and fusses, twitching in the chair like a ruffled hen, crossing first his legs, then his arms, and then his ankles until finally, Crowley relents:
âWell how are you supposed to eat them?â
âWell- Well slowly! With bites so you can enjoy it-â (Crowley scoffs) âand you donât eat the tops, you cut them off!â
Aziraphale gestures hopefully towards the neat pile of strawberry tops on his plate, leaves and stems still attached. Theyâre stacked in a pyramid.
Crowley stares at his angel in disbelief. From the deep furrow in Aziraphaleâs forehead, youâd think he had thrown the fruit to the ground and trampled it. His own eyebrows have not gone back down, and he leans over, fingers closing around the pile of red, white, and leafy tops.
âHere,â he offers dryly, tossing all thirteen of them in his mouth as Aziraphale gapes. âLet me help you with those.â
And when Aziraphale lets out an utterly shocked and rather indignant, âAh!â (to which Crowley responds with a smirk,) thatâs when he brings up the point about scurvy, cuing a long discussion, which turns into a debate, which is concluded only when Crowley finally concedes to letting Aziraphale feed him one (1) strawberry with the top sliced neatly off.
Aziraphale doesnât let him get away without admitting, though Crowley feels entitled to grumble about it first, that it was, in fact, very good. And since Crowley promised himself, long ago and far away, never to lie to his angel, he mutters that, yes, in fact, it was the best one of the lot.
He omits the small and insignificant detail that heâs pretty sure it had less to do with the berry and more to do with the fact that every human sense this body possessed had gone on high alert- and bloody heaven, why had the angel held it up so close to his face, lips pressed in that smug little pout? It was doing things in Crowleyâs chest, and he didnât entirely know if he wanted to keep going, to lean his head on Aziraphaleâs shoulder and mumble something hopelessly affectionate and soft and good-- or combust on the spot.
As it is, Aziraphale is appeased, and settles back in his chair, already rattling off about the latest collection of rare books a collector has donated, and the moment to say something (for if he is ever going to say something, the universe can rest assured it will be during a Moment) has passed. For now, Crowley is content to rest his arms on the table and his chin on his arms and make his sunglasses wiggle on his nose as he soaks in every word.
He does not tell Aziraphale that the reason, the real reason he eats the fruit whole is because the fruit heâs had experiences with is often rotted through, even if it doesnât look like it from the outside, and it is sometimes better to eat things in one bite, rather than to realize a thing is rotted and have time to regret and rethink the eating of the rest. (It never occurs to him to throw the uneaten portion away.) Spoiled fruit is always a nasty surprise, and not one he expected when he invented it in the first place.
Yet another occasion when he has done his job too well.
And then thereâs that whole business with apples, and isnât that why the human race is in this mess in the first place? Though, to be fair, when he is alone in his house at night, with every television and radio switched off, he does eat apples for the thrill- after all, he canât fall farther than he has already.
Every now and again, in their âstrictly businessâ wanderings, the pair runs across a patch of wild strawberries, and Aziraphale will pluck one, and Crowley will miracle him a knife without thought. Itâs become habit now; a penciled-in clause to their Agreement. Crowley eats the tops and Aziraphale the rest.
Crowley doesnât mind. Heâs grown rather fond of the bitter texture of the leaves, the one that means Aziraphaleâs company and besides, now he doesnât have to worry about the betrayal of chancing across a strawberry that tops the one his angel fed him.
And although he still regards most fruit with suspicion, it never occurs to him that these ones from Aziraphale will be anything but good.

Summary:
Rule one: Work hard.
Rule two: Take care of your athletes.
Rule three: Do NOT think about Iwaizumi Hajime.
All of these were fine until the JVA decided that what the national team really needed for the upcoming olympics was rival athletic trainers. Which meant the two of you in the same building for months.
