A cinematic triumph
When filming the music video for Slopey, we realised too late that one camera was filming at 1080p, where the other was filming at only 720p. At first I saw this as a disaster. This would mean we would have to scrap half the footage! Firstly I talked with Clint about this issue. His advice was “why do we have to make footage full screen? Is there something interesting about the black border around the image?” Either way, whether the footage was scrapped or rescaled, it had to be consistent throughout. I then talked to Elvin, also known as LVJ who is also in the collective and was the other filmer with me on this video. He saw that we could layer the video, so we had footage from one film playing in the centre of the screen, and another clip playing on the edges to create an interesting effect, kind of like the HYPE music video done for NE-Yo’s song, “So Sick” I began to see the video in a new light, and there was finally a direction to follow. I was interested in this idea of having multiple clips playing, but I wanted to take it one step further than what I had already seen. I decided to mirror the footage on the left and right of the screen just to see how it looked and I was astonished. This was something I had never seen before. The way we filmed the shots with intention for a specific composition was now void - the unwritten law of the rule of thirds became obsolete. It brought an entirely new element to the footage, something I could not have pictures before experimenting.
