Lately, reading hasn't been much of a retreat, with a few exceptions.
I re-read/re-listened to Lisey's Story by Stephen King. I don't know how to put into words what about the book is so incredible, but even as emotionally exhausting as it can be, it's probably my favorite of his novels. (And I really fucking love the Dark Tower series.) Maybe if I'd only ever read a paper copy, I'd feel less passionately about it, but Mare Winningham as the narrator just knocks it out of the park. Her Lisey, her Scott, her babyluv's just get to me.
I stupidly thought I could grout a shower while listening to the book and boy, that was a terrible idea. It's beautiful, but at times painful, and Winningham's narration is especially poignant.
I read through Fables vol #19, which ended up being more difficult than I expected. The Good Prince (vol #10) is my favorite book, but everything from The Dark Ages on, with the exception of Rose Red, was a challenge. It probably says more about me than the books themselves, but I had to put down Cubs in Toyland mid-way, and I thought that was as far as I'd make it in the series. Without going into spoilers, I was just too upset by the subject matter to go on. I let it sit a day and then skimmed through the end of the book because I was determined to get to the next one. Then I got to the end of #19 and thought, "Well, shit."
In July, the latest Kate Daniels book (Magic Breaks) came out but I was waiting for a library copy so I didn't get my hands on it until a week ago. Not a long wait, all things considered. I thoroughly enjoyed it (I always love Kate), although there was a point where I thought the obvious resolution to the current problem was being delayed longer than was necessary (trying to avoid spoilers) but whatever. I get that it was probably meant to build up emotion.
Then last night I remembered the latest issue of The Wicked and The Divine was out, so I downloaded that in a hurry and read through it twice because it was over too soon. I love that series, but I hate waiting a month for the next chapter.
Aside from the above, I'm in the middle of reading several other books that I just can't seem to get through. Either the language is too dense, or the formatting on my tablet is such that every page is a wall of text without indentations or line breaks.
I am enjoying Haruki Murakami's What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, especially as I train for my next race, but he jumps around in terms of the periods in his life, which has been a little jarring. But there are so many passages I want to highlight or post to Tumblr because they resonate with me.
