Final Assignment - Sound Wizard (22/11/2017)
It has finally come, the last assignment for us to complete this module. A mixture of emotions just pours around me as I can’t wait for this to end but also grief that I might never have the chance to enjoy such module that is so fun and interesting.
The Soundmancers of Phah
Just something I made for an up coming Numenera campaign I’m playing in. I’m playing as one of the Soundmancers on a journey of discovery; a Rren-nu. @stirringsagacity @idaman008 @thesmokinganeen
The Soundmancers, or Harroo(breathy haaar sharp short ooo sound) as they call themselves are a small tribe of near humans. That call the cold desert their home.
The Harroo are able to manipulate the world around them using complex vocalisations. This is often referred to as singing though it is not done for entertainment or story telling; though some Harroo are quite competent singers in the traditional sense. Harroo often use the word Garrishk; to refer to their art. They are able to create a wide variety of effects from concussive blasts and echolocation to disintegration and material fusion. I’ve even seen a Soundmancer hone the edge of an axe using only their voice. Individual techniques are referred to as Gar-nu, and the act of string together several into a complex effect is called Gar-nu Shink-rah; or song forging.
The underground town of Phah (which they call home) is carved from stone using their magic, and is in itself a complex musical instrument. Designed to echo, amplify, and resonate the various songs they forge. They are devoted to their home, and believe that by studying the frequencies of the universe they will one day achieve true harmony. However they do not seek this knowledge only for themselves, and are more than willing to teach what they know to others. While they do trade with surrounding tribes it is limited, normally trading their skills in exchange for food. If not for their cultural practice of sending adolescents on pilgrimages into the greater world few would know the Harroo exist. These walk abouts serve as way for the younger Harroo to reaffirm their commitment to the clan's life work, as well as uncover new truths about universes frequencies, and how to manipulate them. They call this time away from Phah; Rren-nu.
You can recognise the Harroo by their distinctive masks called Maaesto and loose fitting black robes that completely cover them from head to toe called Stygatha. Their masks cover the entirety of their face below the eyes, as well as covering their ears and wrapping around the back of their heads. the masks are normally inlaid with spiralling patterns of glowing paint. Though quite beautiful to behold they are more than just face coverings. The masks actually house various chambers and devices that serve to direct the Harroo’ power. When fully dressed for travel the only part of the Harroo that is visible is their forehead and eyes, which are normally painted in a similar fashion to their mask.on the rare occasions that they remove their vestments you will see the Harroo for what they really are. Lithe humans with cold slick skin with a slight pale green tinge. normally with bright blue or green eyes that have a faint glow at night. The hair on their heads is bone white, and usually shaved to a thin strip and matted into dreads. But these are not the strangest of their features. when at rest their necks seem to have many strange folds and flaps of skin, these however will expand with air while they “sing”. A well trained adult Harroo is more than capable of producing a noise so loud that they can shatter glass, without the aid of a mask.
Though they are no more susceptible to disease than anyone else, the Harroo are particularly wary of respiratory illnesses. So much of their self and societal worth is derived from their vocal ability that even a mild throat infection can often cause severe emotional distress.
