you genuinely do not have to ask

          the party erupts into action in the minutes leading up to midnight.     the noises,   the heat,   the crowding of people;   faizah feels a coarse friction beneath his skin as anxiety prickles at the back of his neck.     he excuses himself from a less-than-riveting conversation with drunk partygoers and steps out onto the patio for fresh air.     when he looks up,   all he can see is venus — the planet of love,   the only star that manages to shine beyond the skyline lights.     how poetic,   he thinks,   listening to the patio door open again and (he listens to the footsteps to tell) his husband steps out.   faizah lost track of the seconds before midnight, but couldn’t hear any drunken cheers to celebrate the new year.

          ❛   come to give me my pre-new year’s kiss?   i’m beginning to predict your g—   ❜   and suddenly,   faizah is spun around and kissed as the clock strikes midnight,   fireworks lighting up the sky and dwarfing the love-star that captured his attention moments ago.     against his better judgement,   his foot lifts as misha places a hand on his hip and the other on the nape of his neck.   they part just an inch and misha gives a smirk that would drive faizah insane if it was any other day.
