I have embarked on a challenge where I draw every single character in the Summer King Chronicles in alphabetical order! I will post them here in small batches, mostly in order, except for particularly spoilery characters... they get their own batch which I will tag appropriately, plus for each one I will tag the books the characters appear in so you can hide tags as you wish :D so far I am already finished with all the A's, just gotta slowly post them now

I spent a lot of time trying to understand cat figures in order to get better at designing these guys.
Mostly did a lot of work getting the design down for Stigr, who I think subconsciously reminded me of Lies of Kiel from Guardians of Ga’hoole. I also liked the idea of him having a smaller beak, bc of the vanir ancestory. Also partially because he reminds me of one of those small Shrike birds that always look angry at the world, but their bodies are so round, lmao.
Hallr and Halvden look very similar, except I plan on giving Hallr an ironically wolf-ish build, as opposed to a cat. With all his terrorizing the wolves and treating them like beasts, it turns out he was the one who was the monster in the night to the wolves. He was the “brute”.
Halvden will be a bit smaller with a bigger beak for what a braggart he used to be. Both are raven inspired, but I might change that for Hallr. Halvden tho definitely fits it, for how cunning he can be.

Originally I had the reasoning behind why Jerod and Gevin planting the seeds in the woods did anything at all as some vague/convoluted thing about intention being amplified by magic - which is still kind of cool and doesn't not work, but also...what if it's a lot simpler than that? Because it could also just be that altering the physical landscape of the forest damages it/the rift itself if done improperly. I think the woods were created to house the rift, not the other way around* and therefore are an extremely delicate kind of "magical ecosystem", which only those with the most sensitive connections to the magical web are able to tend. So when a tree is planted there from the outside world, it changes things. And then when the Guardian is later killed...it changes things A Lot More.
*which is why the planting of the tree actually, I think, causes the rift? And because time works differently in the magic "void"/around it, this created a rift that in essence perpetually exists throughout time, and can never be fully closed, only maintained
