The air that passed through the hills became cold, much like the ground beneath his back. Or perhaps, it was only cold for him. Jian was flat out on the earth, having fallen after being struck in the stomach.

Jian initially thought he had seen the clouds of death above him, but it turned out that he had merely been looking above, where dark clouds slowly moved across the moonlit sky. I am not dead…Is Heaven telling me that there is something else I must do?… But he had fallen unconscious before being able to think further. The last he heard before he became unconscious was the shouting of men, his men, the small army that had unfortunately been separated from him to due the unpredictable terrain.

— About a week and a half later, Jian was back within the presence of his family. And although his heart was content, his soul was weak. He knew, then, that he would not live much longer. Not only that, but his wound became infected.

Over the next two days, he called for his family to see him as he lay helplessly in bed. A few times he would see them together and other times, separately. As much as he hated to burden them with heavy hearts, he needed this. Sun Ce, his firstborn, was the last to be privately called in.

"My son…" Jian lifted his hands but could only manage to weakly hold on as Ce took hold. His breathing became much more staggered. "My—son……" he repeated.

"You are…the new leader…!" He winced and suddenly gripped Ce’s hand. "—Of this family! Of our people…!"

Jian met Ce’s eyes, and immediately, he knew what those eyes were conveying. “Please don’t die!”

The warlord chuckled. “I will not die…my son…I will live on in you…” His hand slipped from Ce’s and touched Ce’s heart.

"You will carry on this family…and I will always…be here…my son…”

Over and over again, he only wanted to continue saying “my son” until he could no longer. It was a way of expressing the pride that he felt towards Ce—his firstborn, that was conceived from young love, a love that continued to last since. You are growing to be a fine young man, Ce…I wish I had more time to tell you just how proud I am of you. As the oldest…you take charge when I am not there…and even when I am—you are honest and responsible. I could not have asked for a better son. When I leave this world...do not be blind over my death. You must never forget about the people--and treat your men as if they were your own kin, for they sacrifice just as much as we do when we are on the battlefield...

“Ce…!” he barely managed to cough out. “Please know…that I am proud…and that I believe in you…”

I love you, son.
