It’s not unusual for maiko and geiko to retire at the end of the year as it gives them a quiet exit. However, it’s always a shock not to see them again in January when the new year begins. I’ve consulted with the annual booklet that Gion Kobu hands out to its members and long time customers and the following maiko and geiko have left: Sonoe (その恵) of Kineya (きねや) Sakiko (紗貴子) of Nishimura (西村) Mamechika (豆千佳) of Arai (新井) I think that Mamechika’s departure is a huge blow as she was extremely talented. But, in all of this bad news there is one sliver of good news! Katsuma (佳つ磨) of Odamoto (小田本) has returned to the profession! It seems as though she took a year and a half off for herself, but now she’s back and will be performing again! I updated the various tabs to reflect the changes last night, so for now they’re back up to date. I do plan on releasing a list of all active maiko and geiko of Gion Kobu just so that it can be searched instead of just found on the tab, so please look forward to that ^^

Another hectic week in the karyukai has come to an end, and with it plenty of news! Karyukai News -Ichisumi (市すみ) of Yamaguchi (やまぐち) in Pontocho had her misedashi on Monday (January 8th). -Kikukame (菊亀) in Nara has her erikae on Thursday (January 11th). -Hatsuyori (初寄り) took place in Gion Kobu on Saturday (January 13th). -There’s a new minarai in Gion Kobu! Her geimei is Katsuharu (佳つ春) and she is from Odamoto (小田本). Her misedashi will take place on January 22nd. -It has been confirmed that Sonoe (その恵) of Kineya (きねや), Sakiko (紗貴子) of Nishimura (西村), and Mamechika (豆千佳) of Arai (新井) in Gion Kobu all left the profession in December. However, long time natori geiko Katsuma (佳つ磨) of Odamoto (小田本) has been listed as active once again!  Blog News -What’s That Thing? Part 6 looked at modern Hagoromo (羽衣). -The Random Fact of The Week looked at Pontocho New Year’s kanzashi. -Mylo’s Pick of The Week went to Kohana (小花) of Masuume (桝梅) in Gion Kobu. -I published the complete list of active maiko and geiko in Gion Kobu that was taken from the 2018 Gion Kobu handbook. -You all sent in wonderful questions again this week, and many of you seem to really enjoy having your questions answered in the “What’s That Thing?” feature!
