Big History Muhammad Ali vs Sonny Liston
The World Heavyweight Championship bout between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston, which took place twice, was one of the most contentious matches in the sport's history. Sports Illustrated ranked the first Liston-Clay fight as the fourth-greatest sporting event of the twentieth century.
The first match took place on February 25, 1964, in Miami Beach, Florida. Clay won as an 8-1 underdog when the champion backed out at the start of the seventh round. Ali knocked out his opponent to win their second match on May 25, 1965, in Lewiston, Maine. The iconic "phantom punch" and the referee's incorrect countdown raised the possibility of a fix, which has been debated ever since.
