“What happened to you?” “I’m not a bender.” Lian telling Katara about her backstory and her tragedy still makes me feel hurt...This scene was good

So much angst potential in that conversation, between Katara who wants to save Lian, and Lian who's lost between believing Katara but affraid of benders... (1/2)

Oh thank you! I think the conversation would be very angsty indeed, because Lian is mad about them destroying her machines before they knew who she was, but she would have a little bit that understands why they are wary of a stranger with the rumors around her. But then they don't stop when she reveals herself? Even though she's saved them before? And they aren't listening when she explains, because obviously if they were actually listening then they would agree with her! Tensions get higher, emotions get hotter, and the conversion turns into a physical fight
Katara's line is fun, and I intended it to show the character growth Lian will go through too when she joins. Katara didn't always see bending about balance, it was more individual and personal than that, it was her culture and rebellion against the fire nation. That's how she sees her bending in the start, and how see saw earthbending on the prison rig. But between that first part and the last part, she's grown. She's traveled with the Avatar and seen spirits, realized the nwt shares her bending but not her culture, realized how everything fits together. Lian hasn't yet, but she will after some time with the Gaang
I checked the Avatar world map, and Omashu is a bit a South-East of General Fong's Fortress (where "The Avatar State" episode mainly takes place), and Lian, as "The Maker", made her attacks and sabotages in the region, so she does know the cavers that leads to Omashu. (Not all cavers of Earth Kingdom ofc, but you got me)
Ah right then. In that case she gets the Gaang out before they even realize the crystals can glow, and the hippies who are there too just kinda wait it out in the cave until the lights bring them out so I guess no one has to worry about dying due to one more competent character
When travelling to Omashu with the Gaang, Lian is still confused about getting a second chance, but she awkwardly wants to help to show her sincerity, and she knows how to (at least she hopes so) : She knows the caverns and all underground roads by heart, so when they're forced to go into caverns to reach Omashu, she's the one guiding them (The msuicians aren't the most serious guides)
Would she know all the caverns, by omashu? The earth kingdom is big, I'd understand if she didn't know all of them. I do think she'd absolutely love the luminescent crystals though, so many things she could do with them...

I know it might sound dangerous, but...Lian would be more the type to fight for the rights of people to dispose of themselves (Kyrmyn, Omashu, Gaoling, etc...) instead of being stuck in an empire that was for the whole war like "Ba Sing Se only matters, the rest can f*ck off", so she would be for the independance of those states rather than for the Earth Kingdom.
Yeah. That's the complicated feelings coming in, because Lian doesn't like her village or want to return, but she wants it to be overruled by a larger Earth Kingdom (read empire) even less. They don't get to have control over her former home because they get power out of it now, when they weren't even there to care about people like her and help them when it was inconvenient during the war. But, who does the tech end up going to, who does her work end up benefiting... Not the isolated villages and separate states, that's for sure

Curious info of the day : in the english dub of the "Avatar The Last Airbender" videogame (the Gamecube/PS2/Wii/Xbox version), Lian is voiced by Gwendoline Yeo. And a quick check on Imdb is enough to realise how much of an important actress she is, in live action like in voice acting. Again, why the hell putting THAT much effort for a character that is allegedly not from the animated show, THQ ?
Well, her big break in acting seems to have been her role in desperate housewives in 2006, the same year the atla game dropped. Shed been popular characters in video games before, but she wasn't famous yet. I wonder if they thought she'd be able to perform in the show later, but then she got her housewives contact renewed and was too busy...
