I just saw Billboard reporting that ASCAP and BMI launched a combined Songview database. Does that change anything about what we know of Harry's writing %, esp for FL? Also I'm still so confused about the split between writing & publishing rights. I tried SOTT and it says ASCAP controls 4.75% (Ryan, Alex) and BMI 20.25% (Jeff, Mitch, Tyler). Wouldn't that leave Harry with 75%? Or 25% because writing is just 50% in general? Bc total shares (including publishing) by ASCAP/BMI are listed as 50%..
(I'm Songview anon) I also tried Adore You now, for which we assumed an even split of 25% among all four writers. But the database gives 50 % writing credit to ASCAP which is only Amy Allen - Tyler is BMI (25 % credit), Kid Harpoon PRS and Harry GMR of course. So it seems Harry's and Kid's combined share of Adore You is 25%, if I interpret that correctly? Thank you so much! I hope I'm not annoying, just super interested in all the bts work of songwriting.
Please ignore my previous ask about Adore You, I just figured out that Kid Harpoons PRO PRS is represented by ASCAP as well in their database. So it's confirmed now that AY is 25% for each writer. And for example Lights Up is 40 % Harry, 45 % Tyler and 15 % Kid Harpoon, if I read that correctly. That's new information, right? I'm excited :)
Hi! No, of course you’re not annoying - I’m a geek with this stuff so I’m glad when other people are.
It’s great that ASCAP and BMI have combined their databases in Songview, cos it makes searching their catalogues far easier. But it doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know about Harry’s song-writing credit share on FL, because we already know his share via his PRO, Global Rights Music.
Re. SOTT, Harry has 50% credit on that song. As you’ve seen above, the way the different PROs present their information differs, which can be really confusing. Added to this, I think you’re confused about how the writer/publisher split relates to the song-writing credit (for example you said “writing is just 50% in general”). Song-writing credit share is 100% of the credit share. The writer then shares the performance royalties due from that credit share 50/50 between themselves and their publisher. That’s what the PROs list.
So if a song-writer wrote a song 50/50 with another song-writer and they each had 50% of the song-writing credit, 50% of each of their royalties go to their publisher, which is 25% of the performance royalties earned by the song per songwriter. That doesn’t mean they wrote 25% of the song, it means that half their proceeds from their song-writing goes to the publisher.
As I said, the PROs present their information differently. Some PROs list the songwriter/publisher split (like ASCAP). Some don’t (like Harry’s PRO, GMR, which makes it more straightforward) . BMI list it at 100% each which can be confusing and may make it look like a song-writer had double the credit share compared to their ASCAP co-writer.
For example, re. your question on SOTT, Ryan & Alex actually share a 9.5% songwriting credit between them (4.75% each, of which 50% goes to them and 50% to their publishers). Jeff, Mitch and Tyler share 40.5% between them (20.25% goes to their publishers), and Harry has 50%. When it doubt, divide or multiply by 2!
Hope that helps explain your question over SOTT and hasn’t confused you further! :)
