As part of the fight against rhino poaching, a black rhino was darted and dehorned at #Somkhanda on Saturday morning to minimize its risk of becoming a poaching victim. it is important to note that the dehorning of Rhino does not happen in isolation, and is not seen as the only solution, but is rather an additional strategy in unison with the continued security, awareness and collaboration of the reserve. The dehorning process is aimed at devaluing the Rhino and increasing the risk to the poacher with very limited return - it is aimed at reducing the risk. The process lasts about 25 min and the rhino is then woken from sedation to safely move off into the bushveld again. An eventful few days since being back in South Africa! Saturday saw us join an African Wild Dog collaring and a Black Rhino de-harming procedure. Here you can see a female African Wild Dog, who is actually the alpha female of the pack, has been sedated and fitted with an anti-snare collar. Not only will this collar allow researchers at @wildlife_act to monitor the packs movements but it could also save her life! The collar is designed in a way that should she walk through a snare it will catch on the collar and can only tighten around the collar and not her neck and she can pull the snare free from whatever it is attached to. Then if it doesn't loosen off naturally a researcher can dart and remove it for her. A huge thank you to @wildlandssa for hosting us!
