Karter knew Saelum was awake. Though it was silent in their bedroom, the human could sense that something was amiss. His cores powers give him the ability to pick up on energy, the sudden racing of the troll’s heart, as well as the light scent of adrenaline. Nightmares don’t always come with thrashing or shouting. Sometimes, the quiet ones are... worse. 

A minute or two passes by, and the smaller boy doesn’t turn to Karter for any comfort. Karter could guess why. He’s supposed to be asleep himself, and if Saelum thinks he can handle it without ‘bothering’ or ‘burdening’ anyone, he was going to. That meant no waking up Karter.

❝ Sᴀᴇʟᴜᴍ...? Bᴀʙʏ?❞ He whispers into the dark, and he just knows the other is holding his breath right now. ❝ Iᴛ’s ᴏᴋᴀʏ. Yᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇɴ’ᴛ ᴀʟᴏɴᴇ. ...Is ɪᴛ ᴏᴋᴀʏ ɪғ I ᴛᴏᴜᴄʜ ʏᴏᴜ?❞

There have been times after having nightmares when Karter doesn’t like being touched, and he needs to be sure his boyfriend is okay with contact. Once he sees Saelum nod, Karter scoots over and pulls him closer to rest on his chest. He doesn’t ask about the dream, only gently trails his fingers through Saelum’s hair. In turn, clawed fingers curl into the fabric of Karter’s shirt.

The human begins to hum a tune. It’s an old melody, one nearly lost to him that since being recovered has been ever more dear to his heart. One of the few things he has left of the mother who bore him, and the aunt that raised him and sang the lullaby in her place.
