beginning of a short story
“I’ll race you to the end of the jetty!” shouted a young boy, with long blond hair that curled at the ends and a cast on his right arm from a sports injury. His sister, with hair identical to his, and skin like she’d never seen the sun, beamed brightly, her smile all holes. She was four years younger than her brother, and significantly shorter. Her legs were as thin as a plastic water bottle and her arms thinner. Yet she raced him with every ounce of energy in her tiny body, he with calves like a strong horse and arms with muscles already visible.
They sped off toward the jetty, little feet dashing in the sand, grains flying behind them onto the faces of adults who glowered in their path. For the boy it was easy to ascend the huge rocks that made up the jetty, all different colors and shapes and sizes. Once he had reached the surface of the rocks, barefoot, he took off, laughing as he hopped from boulder to boulder, feeling the hot sun beat down on his bare back. He was halfway down the jetty by the time his little sister managed to climb up. She was still laughing, but with labored breaths. For her there were many niches between the rocks where she could see the crashing waves beneath her and smell the salt of the ocean like a pungent beast curling in her nostrils. She scampered across the jetty, carefully avoiding the gaps in the surface. Her brother, who had reached the last rock, and towered over the sea like Poseidon, turned back, and squinted his eyes to keep from tearing from the blustering wind. With a grin, he bellowed, “I beat you!” but she was too far away to hear. He watched as she continued to run, moving slower with each step, obviously struggling. And as she mounted the rock marking the halfway point, she looked up, taking her focus away from the task at hand, and a sharp wind blew, knocking her off the side of the jetty without so much as a scream.
The Cook's Son
The cook's son was not pleased when he learned that the princess had reached a marriageable age. As long as the boy could remember, he had brought the princess a boiled egg for breakfast each morning. As a reward, he would always receive a shiny trinket. The cook's son did not imagine that any potential prince would appreciate his presence in the royal bedchamber every morning, nor did he expect him to allow the princess to be so generous with her gifts.
