Grammar Follow Up
Hi All,
As promised, I wanted to follow up on a question raised in class: how are prepositional phrases different from (or similar to) dependent clauses.
The definition of a prepositional phrase might be helpful to review. A prepositional phrase includes a preposition (a term that indicates location, including temporal location - ) and the object to which the preposition refers (eg. “at home”).
As we discussed in class, a dependent clause includes a subject and a verb (eg. she writes).
Thus, the two kinds of sentence parts *are* different; prepositional phrases do not include a subject and a verb.
What the two share in common is the fact that dependent clauses and prepositional phrases are not meant to stand alone; they are not independent clauses and, therefore, must be attached to an independent clause in some way. Otherwise, such phrases/clauses would be sentence fragments.
This is all important information when it comes to decisions you will make regarding comma usage. We reviewed some major rules for comma use in class today. If you would like to learn more, I suggest you visit the Purdue OWL site, which is a phenomenal resource for writers.
