Suma / Solkoa Tin Updates: PSK Rev 2.4 (‘ish, it changes a few times a year)

I posted the contents of my P.S.K last year and had a great response from it. Other people posted theirs after and by comparing what other people use, I managed to re-evaluate what I opted to put into mine. The tin has remained the same, it’s the Law Industries SUMA / SOLKOA survival tin in the black finish. I did notice a few items caused problems when in extreme cold or extreme wet conditions so those items have been swapped out. The first one that springs to mind is the P38, its compact, easy to store in the tin and effective but when your hands are extremely cold in the snow, it was almost impossible to use it to strike the firesteel. The simple grip test of little finger to thumb in the old traditional sign was not possible, the grip on the P38 was never going to happen as a result. Even gripping between other fingers was not offering any results. A hand under an armpit for twenty minutes managed to get enough heat into the muscles to work, but the cost was time. If you need a fire and fast, this is not a luxury you can always afford. The P51 has taken center stage and seems easier to get the grip onto, even being able to be physically duct taped to the finger for grip if the need arose.

The other addition was a folding card knife. These are wallet sized, foldable and reusable knives. Originally designed as disposable scalpels for military surgical hospitals they offer a thin, sharp edge and a flat form until you need to use it. Gloved hands, cold, wet it makes no difference, it fits into the hand and works. At a couple of mm thick it slips into the tin easily and with careful, well thought out use it will last quite some time in the field.

An IR Photon was added as a few times we have been told it would not be possible to continue without carrying one. So one has, rather awkwardly, found its way into the tin for a permanent carry. The white version is now replaced with the Red again as its easier on the eyes at night. I have used white in the past, but prefer the red for most tasks if the option is mine to make.

The external real estate has once again been used with the Covert Patch Pocket being added. Normally this one is black, but it was given away to help someone out and I had the MTP version on my jacket so have used that for the contrast in the pictures. It allows some tools to be carried on you without having to open the tin, like a simple fire kit for example, or water sterilising tablets. It’s been a handy addition to have and weights next to nothing, also it does not interfere with the normal use or sealing of the tin. Two rangers bands also help keep the tin closed, they have a lot of uses, so they also are included as a result. The hydration bags are the older Law Industries versions. I’m most likely going to opt for a couple of the newer ones as they are thicker, but they can be used to wrap the tin up and seal it for protection from damage in the belt kit, or stowed in the underside of the straps and the Velcro will hold the whole package together. The bags also help with the obvious water sterilisation/carry, as well as to carry contents in your pocket if the tin is in use, or you just want to organise a few items in your pocket from the tin, for hunting, trap making etc.

The addition of a few small split rings would be a useful addition for this purpose. The other big item, or big in stature item that gets a mention now is the titanium toothpick. It’s not an expensive item to add to the set up, it fits in any gap easily and it’s dangerously sharp. The current contents list includes:-

As mentioned, the addition of some small split rings for trap making would be a useful addition, as well as some O rings for carrying the Extreme Firefly Light from Law Industries using the cord. The right size would also work with the cord and the saw blade to make a handle for easier working.

SUMA / Solkoa Survival Tin One Year On:

Early last year we brought you the SUMA / Solkoa Survival tin. This item has been really popular and we have supplied them to many professionals in all roles. This one has been with me for a year, its had some use, abuse and some testing, even being used as a buried cache.

The original contents list has changed on and off, some parts were used, some were never used so swapped out with other items. Its not a fixed essentials pack, its an adaptive platform to give you a host of features to keep you safe, alive, working and doing what you do best. There is a reason why the Seal Teams adopted this item, its performance for carrying the tools, or for simply digging if you had too, or beating in a nail or using it as a club to defend yourself, it performs even better than you can possibly imagine.

I've not had any problems, I've added an area of hook and loop as I have needed one at times, at other times its been removed as I did not require it or want it. Its an item that will sit in your webbing silently for some time, but when you need it, this can prove to be an entire belt kit in a box and it wont let you down.

As usual these are selling out fast! For now they are back in stock and we think this is the best price on them too! We have found out other colors are available and know that we can get a limited batch sent to the laser engravers. So what we may be planning is a limited run of these with a logo or design on. 2 carry options for the smaller SUMA tins by  SOLKOA.

I was glad to see that the small SUMA tin just happened to fit in 2 of my favorite pouches the Molle compatible Kifaru GPS pouch was a snug fit but could still get a few key items in the top as well and can be belt worn using a Malice clip .

The neat freak neck pouch by Tareinco offered a neck carry platform or cargo pocket carry with more real estate space and could fit an aloksak  Personal FAK in the hidden back compartment as well as the other gear in the main zippered compartment .

 Ive not had the pleasure to see a large SUMA tin yet so cant say if they will fit in either of these pouch’s.

SUMA tin .

 The legendary Solkoa SUMA tin ,very kindly sent to me by the folks at Survival depot .

  This is the small version of the aircraft grade 6061ally which is half the weight of Ti but x4 lighter than stainless and has an anodized finish which is safe to boil water in in an emergency .

The lid has a rubber gasket to keep out dirt and moisture and is scured via 2 Velcro one -wraps , the small version will easily carry all the items shown in the top pic .
