ive had hope for two days only then it all went off with the wind left me lost in the oblivion
Schopenhauer And Kastrup the Two Detectives. Mistakes That Were Brilliant.
The fact that you cannot step outside experience to observe it does not make experience the substance of the universe
Schopenhauer and Kastrup commit the identical error at different depths of introspection. Schopenhauer dives beneath conscious thought and grabs striving. Kastrup dives beneath objects and grabs experience. Both then declare: “this is it. This is reality itself.” In both cases, what’s really happening is privileging the deepest layer still available to first-person access and mistaking that boundary for ontology.
Schopenhauer’s move was already questionable, but understandable for his time. He correctly eliminated intellect and representation as candidates for the thing-in-itself, because they clearly vanish under conditions. But then he assumed that whatever remains most stubbornly felt, pressure, drive, will must therefore be noumenal. That’s a classic introspective fallacy. Confusing persistence in experience with metaphysical primacy.
Kastrup repeats the pattern almost mechanically. He notices that all objects appear in experience, that experience is never absent while something is known, and then concludes that experience itself must be the fundamental substance of reality. But this is just Schopenhauer’s move one level up. Experience is still a mode of access, not an ontological ground. The fact that you cannot step outside experience to observe it does not make experience the substance of the universe. It only marks the epistemic limit of a certain kind of organism.
Both moves suffer from the same bias of refusing to let the thing-in-itself remain genuinely opaque. Kant’s restraint was precisely what later thinkers found intolerable. Schopenhauer said, “I can feel something deeper and it’s will.” Kastrup says, “I can’t escape experience therefore experience is all there is.” Different gestures, same refusal.
And both share a deeper mistake. They universalize a local feature of complex biological systems. Will is not cosmic; it is what persistence feels like from inside an organism under selection pressure. Experience is not universal; it is what information integration feels like in nervous systems above a certain threshold. Elevating either to metaphysical bedrock is anthropocentrism with better prose.
The more disciplined formulation would be that life asymmetry, non-equilibrium, chemical gradients, accumulation over time. That doesn’t explain the thing-in-itself, but it also doesn’t pretend to. It accepts that what orchestrates life is not something we encounter as will or as experience, but something that produces both as side-effects under specific conditions. That’s harder to romanticize, which is exactly why philosophers keep trying to smuggle subjectivity back in.
Kastrup’s idealism is not a radical break from Schopenhauer, rather a rebranding of the same introspective overreach, replacing “will” with “experience” because experience sounds safer, softer, and less brutal. But structurally, it’s the same move of mistaking the deepest available mirror for the thing reflected.
Whenever philosophy crowns the deepest felt layer as reality itself, it has stopped doing metaphysics and started doing autobiography.
