"That is the emergency system," Wrex said with a low growl. "You wouldn't think of having an emergency system for your planet's atmosphere, would you?"
Shepard snorted. "We almost had to at one point."
"That's a story I'd like to hear one day." Wrex adjusted his shotgun as they approached the base of the tower. "But the Citadel couldn't exist without an atmosphere, and without humans around to poke at the technology and question everything, I guess nobody thought to think of a backup system." He shrugged his massive shoulders.
"Your lives must have been really boring without us around," Shepard said with a laugh.

I thought this was a quarter and picked it up and was immediately reminded of Solid Fluidity by @barbex and the disaster our heroes are hurtling towards. D:
I would just like to say that I recently stumbled across Solid Fluidity on Fan Fiction. I absolutely love your writing and representation of the Shepard/Vakarian relationship. Along with all the cultural and communication differences. It really makes it feel like an actual living breathing relationship between two people. I cannot thank you enough for your writing, and am cheering you on.

(A big part of this chapter is Vigil being a chatter bug. I swear I already cut half of what he said but he still keeps on monologing in this chapter like a failed Shakespearean actor.)

"What are those things?" Shepard wondered aloud about circular containers protruding from the walls.
"Cryopods, maybe," Liara said. "They must have thought they could stay in stasis until the Reapers came back. This bunker was possibly the last refuge of their whole species."
"You mean there could still be frozen protheans in there?"
"I'm not getting any energy readings in here, from anywhere," Garrus said. "This building is dead, I don't think the cryopods still work."
"There must be thousands of these pods," Langenfeld said.
Liara sighed. "They were still hopeful. Even in their defeat, they hoped to survive to fight the Reapers again."
Shepard scrunched up her nose. "Sounds either arrogant or delusional."
"Yeah," Wrex grunted. "They lost the war once and thought they could win it on second try?"

In Solid Fluidity I wanted to Garrus and Shepard be experienced adults (to ward off all the blushing virgins I kept coming across in other fics), so I added (rather crudely, I was a brandnew babywriter back then) something about Garrus and his sexual experiences:
He almost had sex with a drell man but after falling unconscious from the hallucinogenic saliva and having to spend a whole day on a bad trip just from a bite to his neck, he decided that he didn’t have a gender barrier but he definitely had a species barrier when it came to drell.

This is foreshadowing! Oh yes, way back in the beginning, I already had plans for the sequel. Because that drell man? That was Thane! And I have a whole section pre-written in my scrap file for when they meet again in ME2:
The three of them stood frozen, Garrus and Jane staring at the drell and the assassin slowly looking from Jane to Garrus. Jane caught that look and the clamped mandibles on Garrus face and burst out laughing
“Wait a minute, that look transcends species, it means ‘Shit I had sex with this guy and now it’s awkward!’ so how about if we come clean right here and now. I have met this man before under the name Tannor Nuara and, yes, we had a one-night-stand. That was what, six (timeframe?) years ago? So what’s the story with you guys?”
Shepard could hardly stop the gleeful smile spreading on her face.
Garrus groaned and his mandibles clicked against his face.
“Well, we sort of tried to get somewhere but his saliva...”
“Ohh, did you hallucinate? I had some reaction to his saliva that made me see pretty colors everywhere.” Jane smiled at that memory of the brightly pink and green drell she saw glowing under her while they had sex.
“Yeah - it wasn’t like that for me.” Garrus mumbled, “It was like the worst trip ever, I fell unconscious and spend a whole day lying down, reliving nightmares”
The assassin let out a small cough and looked to the floor. “I’m very sorry that the experience was so unpleasant for you, I assure you if I had known of the problems my saliva can cause with turians I never would have initiated...”
“The initiating was pretty mutual if I remember correctly.” Garrus snorted.
Jane raised an eyebrow at that remark from Garrus and he grinned at her.
“I had quite an adventurous phase for a while after our ‘meeting’ in Choras Den.”
“Now aren’t you full of surprises, my armored turian!” Jane said with a smile and a wink. “Let’s go boys, we have stuff to do.”
See? This is from 2012 or beginning of 2013! Look at me, all planning out sequels and stuff, before I even knew what a giant endeavor this fic was going to be. I honestly don’t know if this section will even fit once I get there because that fic has taken a turn to the dark by now.
