Sofy Ruby [소피루비]
Last night I was on EBS channel korean website, searching some Miraculous Ladybug stuff, just to see if there is anything new there. Then I discovered some other mahou shoujo genre animation series in the kids section.
I do somewhat know that animation fans in South Korea do have a sweet spot in the mahou shoujo genre, but what I didn’t expect is that, although everything in the animation series look new and more colorful, they still love the early classic plot of mahou shoujo from the 80s (and they apply it to those series), you know, something like “Himitsu No Akko-chan” and even “Creamy Mami”, where a little girl or adolescent girl as the protagonist, can turn into an adult or just abit older version of herself, with some help from magical item such as a wand or mirror, and probably from a magical creature too (which usually will be the official mascot of the series), and can do practically EVERYTHING SOO PERFECTLY for the first time, without even have to learn them.
So, I discovered this mahou shoujo series, I copied the korean title and paste it to google translate, and it translates to “Sophie Ruby”, but it was wrong, the title in the english spelling is actually “Sofy Ruby”, which is interesting and cute. I even did some research with Google-sensei, and I also discovered that it’s super popular with the kids in South Korea, like from toys, costumes, liquid shower soap, shampoo, shoes, clothing, musicals, yup you name it, almost everything.
(Keep in mind, I don’t know how to read or speak Korean, but I do pick up some basics, some words. I can only understand soo little of the language, I could understand the plot of the stories in each episodes, but I still couldn’t understand the whole dialogues. Yes, I did waste the whole night watching the series until ep 40 AHAHAHAHAHA)
From the very left, are Ruby’s 2 BFFs (which I still don’t know the names, sry.), then Ruby, next to her is Sofy, her 19 year-old ver of herself, lastly on the very right is Prince Spinel true form (Sry fangirl moment). On the most left top is the Wish Fairy in the form of a talking magical book, and on the most right top, is Prince Spinel’s cursed chibi or mascot form.
This is the plot from Wikipedia, but what do I understand is that, to help the cursed prince, Prince Spinel (well if Im not mistaken, his name sounds like Spinel), to break his curse from being a chibi mascot all the frickin time, Ruby have to “transform” into a 19 year-old ver of herself, which she goes by the name, Sofy. When everytime Ruby transform to Sofy, at the same time, Prince Spinel will also be able to transform back to his true form and together they “Clear” every “Good deed” missions. Fyi a talking magical book and a magical pen responsible for their every transformations. Then later on 2 of Ruby’s BFFs will join in the quest. I SHIP RUBY/SOFY x SPINEL. The ship is slow coz lots of angst.
Im not sure which company responsible for the animation, but I only saw “CHOIROCK/ EBS All Rights Reserved” on the poster, and I found this site, which I think it is Choirock’s official website. I also found a Sofy Ruby channel on youtube, but Im not that sure if it’s really an official channel or not. But just go ahead and check it out.
It’s soo damn cute, colorful, and awesome (but yeah much kpop dances and songs in the series as expected from the kpop country), I still wonder why no one from the English speaking world never even bother to cover about this series, I did do research, but I can only found more info on korean blogs or websites (which I can’t read and google translate doesn’t help much). So if anyone knows more about this series, I’ll be soo glad just to hear anything about it.
