My dad has been with me since day 1.
Even though we've had our ups and downs, and he's still getting used to my name and pronouns, he has never been shy or embarrassed about me. He is also the least self conscious person I know (which results in terrible fashion choices...). As much as he annoys me sometimes, I'm always grateful to have his 100% support.

That photo of my son crying at the Texas State Capitol? Let me tell you what really happened.
I’m a bad mom for “coddling” my elementary-aged child and not teaching him to “man up.” For those keeping score at home, trolls are telling me that Max isn’t transgender, while simultaneously using male pronouns and saying a 9-year-old boy should know how to “man up.” Can you say “cognitive dissonance?”
Titi Jenn just taught us a sweet lesson.

The most shocking thing about having a transgender teenager?
Things really weren't much different and in a few weeks, I calmed down; this was part of the same, larger sea change. And at least his gender is easier to talk about: thanks in part to highly visible trans people like Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner, people "get" that some folks have bodies that don't match the gender they know they are; It's harder to explain what it is to be nonbinary, or someone who doesn't feel that they're fully a girl or a boy.
The Daily Beast spoke to transgender people across the country to find out what challenges they face in relationships.
Transgender children have been much in the headlines after President Trump rescinded Title IX protections for trans students. That would be enough to make Laurie Frankel’s new novel, about parents raising a trans daughter, relevant and timely. This Is How It Always Is would, however, be an exceptional book about parenting, family, and identity at any time.
