New in town
You had never planned to move to Tulsa, but here you were, another Soc kid transplanted into a world that already had its own rules. Your parents had settled on the east side trying to keep you in your comfortable little bubble, but everything felt⦠different.
The streets smelled like gas and asphalt the chatter of the Greasers was rougher than you were used to, and somehow you already felt like an outsider.
It didnāt take long for you to notice him.
Sodapop Curtis was impossible to miss. Golden Hair that caught the sun like it belonged to someone from a magazine, a grin that seemed to light up the world, and eyes that..well they stared right through your carefully practiced Soc composure. You tried to look unimpressed when he noticed you watching him from across the drive in parking lot, but the flutter in your chest betrayed you.
"Hey," Soda said the first time he came over, all easy charm and a little cocky swagger. "You're new. Donāt see your kind around here much."
You tilted your head, resisting the urge to roll your eyes. "My kind? Please, I'm not that different."
He laughed, golden and warm, and it made you feel⦠soft, somehow. "Sure," he said shrugging. "Let's see if you survive hanging out around the Curtis boys first."
It started small, Soda would wave whenever he saw you walking down the street. Sometimes he'd bring a soda or a bag of candy just because. He never pushed, never forced conversation, but every glance, every smile, felt like an invitation you couldn't resist.
One Saturday, Ponyboy had dragged Darry and Two-Bit off somewhere and the house was quiet. Soda leaned against the doorway of the kitchen, twirling a straw between his fingers, eyes sparkling. "You hungry?" he asked.
You laughed, perched on the edge of the counter. "Depends. What are you offering?"
"Me." he said with a grin that made your knees weak. "And maybe some leftover fries if you insist"
You laughed, shaking your head. "You're ridiculous"
"Yeah, but you like it" he said, leaning closer. And you did. Oh, you did.
The next hour was spent in easy conversation. Soda teasing you, you rolling your eyes but smiling, the kind of laughter that makes your stomach ache and your heart feel full. At one point, he bumped your shoulder with his own mock serious. "You know..you're part of the gang now. That's a lot of responsibility"
āOh really?ā you said pretending to be stern."What kind of responsibilities?"
"Likeā¦laughing at my jokes, holding my hands when we watch a scary movie or scary stuff happens..and maybe..just maybe..letting me steal a kiss every now and then?"
You froze, heart thudding. And sodas grin grin softened. "I'm kidding" he said lightly though his thumb brushed against yours, electric and teasing. "Mostly"
you walked with Soda toward the edge of the park. He talked about everything, his brothers, the gang, why he loved Tulsa despite its rough edges. You told him about your old school, your favorite books, the songs that made you feel alive. And somewhere between the sunset and his easy laughter? you realized you hadnāt felt this safe or understood in months.
"Hey." he said suddenly, stopping mid-step. He turned to face you, sunlight catching the strands of his hair. "Can I ask you something?"
You nodded, suddenly nervous. "Anything."
"Do youā¦like me?" His voice was soft, almost uncertain, and your stomach flipped.
You laughed, a little breathlessly "Sodaā¦I think Iāve liked you since the first time I saw you."
His grin returned, wide and unstoppable, and he reached for your hand. "Wellā¦that makes two of us."
It wasnāt dramatic or rushed. There were no shouting confessions or epic gestures just a soft, golden kind of moment, where hands met and smiles were exchanged, and the rest of the world seemed to melt away.
Over the next few weeks, Soda became your guide to Tulsa the good, the bad, and the messy. He introduced you to his brothers, to the gang, to a city that had felt so strange and intimidating before. And in turn, you taught him about your world too, your music, your favorite coffee shop, your love of old movies.
One lazy afternoon, you were sprawled on the Curtis living room couch, feet on Sodaās lap, as he brushed your hair back from your face. "You know," he said, leaning down so his forehead rested against yours, "I think you make this town better. Just by being here."
You smiled heart full. "You're pretty amazing too, you know."
He chuckled, fingers tracing circles on your wrist. "I think we make a pretty good team..Soc girl."
You laughed, and it was soft, happy and real. "Yeah⦠we do."
And in that moment, with the sun streaming through the curtains and Soda's golden eyes watching you with all the warmth in the world, you knew something. Tulsa might have been new. Your life might have been messy. But for the first time in a long time you felt like you belonged, right here, with him.
Soda grinned, brushing his lips against your temple. "Golden hour suits you," he whispered
You laughed, heart swelling and kissed him on the cheek. "Golden hour, golden boy."
"Perfect" he said, leaning back with that grin of his, hands still entwined with yours. "We're perfect."
And for the first time since you'd arrived in Tulsa, you believed it.
