my brother's white teacher is planning on getting another tatoo. i love tatoos but she's getting a sugar skull, a sacred mexican heart (?), a bird, a rose, a hindu symbol and fire. i felt like screaming. when she was talking about DDLM i said that it is very sacred and important religious celebration, explaining it like the way one may visit a grave to respect those who've passed away. she agreed and then told me about her mortality-representing sugar skull tat. what do i even say 2 this gringa?
Wow, that is quite the mix of cultural appropriation. Her planned tattoos are without a doubt offensive. She clearly doesn’t understand the sacred nature of the holiday if she is still getting it. How the fuck does her sugar skull tatt represent mortality? Ugh the logic is ignorant!
Honestly, to most white people who get inappropriate tattoos, I hope they know that they are offending us. I wonder what will happen if you tell her you’d be offended if she got the tattoo. It is, ultimately, a disrespect to our ancestors and our traditions when our culture is twisted to an edgy, out of context tattoo.
