There’s a lot more to etiquette than knowing how to set a proper table or which flatware to use at which time. It’s also about traveling through the world with confidence, sincerity and respect for all people. No one taught more about the importance of that than Emily Post, who created the code of conduct that defined good manners and social graces in the 20th century. She was an amazingly talented writer, a successful businesswoman, a household name and everybody’s favorite go-to authority on all questions dealing with tricky social situations. Here are 7 things you might not know about this beloved icon... 1. She published her best known book Etiquette in 1922 when she was 50 years old. 2. An instant success, it was originally titled Etiquette: In Society, In Business, In Politics and at Home 3. By 1930, Etiquette had sold over a million copies and still remains in continuous print today. 4. After 13 years of marriage and two babies, she divorced her husband in 1905 after discovering he was having numerous affairs. She never remarried again. 5. In addition to writing about manners and social graces, Emily was also a talented novelist, a travel adventure writer, a columnist and a radio show host. 6. She was once referred to as the second most famous woman in the world. Eleanor Roosevelt was the first:) 7. Five generations of her family continue to champion the work of this extraordinary woman with the the Emily Post Institute, a company which Emily herself, founded in 1946 to promote kindness and consideration through social awareness, respect and understanding of all people. It is super exciting to have a 1960 edition of her Etiquette book in the shop. This was the tenth edition of the book and the 93rd printing. It’s fun to flip through and see what the questions and concerns were of midcentury America and how tricky situations were handled then. While lifestyles might have changed dramatically since the book’s debut, there is still so much appropriate information in these pages. Cheers to Emily for teaching everyone how to be a bit more kind. #emilypost #manners #socialgraces #etiquette #kindnesswins #1960s https://www.instagram.com/p/BxsVBEAniu-/?igshid=1m825kvi74524
