Undocumented Immigrants can’t benefit from government assistance, Uncle John, you’re just a racist.
I live in the south, and I’m sick of having this argument with people, so I’m going to write it out so that I can just link it from now on and I don’t have to waste the breath.
One of the biggest and most ignorant things people say about undocumented immigrants is, “They’re coming over here and getting on all the welfare programs and draining the economy dry.” No they’re not, Aunt Carol, they literally can’t. I’ve been on social welfare programs since I was a small child, and I know the ins and outs of it.
First off, can anyone tell me the first thing you need when you go into the social security office to apply for benefits? Anyone? The answer is a social security number. Not only that, but if you are an adult over the age of 18, you also need a valid picture ID. Without those two pieces of information, you will be turned away.
They used the picture ID to verify the name on the social security card and your appearance to the name. If any of this is incorrect, you will be arrested. There is usually an armed police officer in the building (there is in mine, anyway). If you do not have these things, YOU CANNOT APPLY FOR BENEFITS OF ANY KIND. Period. End of story.
There are only two ways to get a social security number: Be born in the U.S. or become a lawful permanent resident. However, there’s a kicker. A lawful permanent resident, otherwise known as a legal immigrant, MUST WAIT FIVE YEARS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS. Oh, yes. Being a legal resident isn’t enough; you have to fucking WAIT for five fucking years before you can even look at the paperwork to apply. You don’t have access to food stamps, disability, SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, or Section 8.
Some undocumented immigrants can apply for select state benefits, such as Head Start, WIC, and emergency medical care for children, but they are extremely limited and don’t offer nearly enough. The only possible way for an undocumented immigrant to have access to any sort of benefit program is to have a dependent child, and the benefits are for the child, not the parent.
Here’s an interesting fact: legal immigrants use federal public benefit programs at lower rates than U.S.-born citizens. As recently as 2013, the rate at which non-citizens have used public benefit programs was less than that of U.S.-born citizens. For example, 32.5 percent of native-born citizen adults receive SNAP benefits compared to 25.4 percent of naturalized citizen adults and 29 percent of non-citizen adults. In addition to immigrants’ lower rate of SNAP usage, they also receive lower benefit values, costing the program less.
The other argument, that they don’t pay taxes, is also false. Immigrants on work visas are issued temporary social security numbers, but many work under the table. Even still, research reviewed by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office indicates that between 50 percent and 75 percent of unauthorized immigrants pay federal, state, and local taxes. Illegal immigrants are estimated to pay in about $7 billion per year into Social Security. However, without a social security card, they cannot receive a tax refund.
So, if this is the argument you use against immigrants and to justify what’s happening at the border, please just accept the fact that you’re a racist prick and sit the fuck down, Kevin.
