Sochi Olympics 2014 | Aerials. The fingers of God coming down from heavens. Or alien death rays. This is my fav pic from the Olympics. @davidburnettfoto gave me some advice at the beginning of my career - “if you see a crowd of photogs standing around looking for the same picture - go somewhere else.” So I did. I climbed up the slope of the snow covered ramp slipping in the melting ice (it was a warm day). Snow and water and sweat got all over my cameras as I made my way up the steep climb - hoping for a better angle. As my lens frosted over from the melting water, the venue’s stadium lighting began to flare. To flare beautifully. To add another element to the frame. And there were no other photographers in sight. Sochi Olympics 2014 | Women’s Ice Hockey. Sometimes happy accidents bring the best type of images. I found shooting hockey tough. I found it hard to create a clean aesthetic image. I found the plexi safety glass to be hard to work with. It messed up my focus, the lenses whirring away pulling back and forth with each athlete zooming by. Sochi Olympics 2014 | The ski jump. By far the hardest event to shoot. Athletes in the air, in an arc, in the dark, coming towards you and then past you. Sometimes when shooting sports there is only one prime space to get the best shot. I tried to walk away and shoot from a different location. I even tried from under the lip of the jump ramp itself.
