BLOOD
MACEY, I’ve just the thing.
The heart was heavy in Phi's hands, and slippery. It persisted in pulsing prettily and frantically against her fingers despite having been separated from its owner, as if it sought to make up now for the years he'd signed away. A lesser devil might have dropped it, but Phi was practiced in the art of soul collection. Her cohorts gripped tight the man in question, keeping him on his knees while he, chest gaping, struggled and screamed and cursed Phi as a traitor and a whore. She approached him, the click of stiletto heels echoing through the empty chamber, leaned forward, and drew one bloodied hand down the side of the man's cheek.
"Dear boy," she said, "did you forget? This was always our agreement."
Then she dug her nails into the organ and squeezed. The man spasmed and choked, and the heart trembled until it popped, spurting blood onto the man's face, before it crumbled to a fine pink dust, revealing the sphere of light that had been hiding inside. The man fell still. As the devils let his body fall, the ballroom floor opened beneath their feet to a roaring sea of dark clouds and electricity. Heat rolled up from it, searing Phi's skin from her human flesh.
"Hail Lucifer," said Phi, balancing the tiny white sun on her hand.
"Hail Lucifer," echoed her cohorts.
And so they fell to Pandæmonium.
But I also found this, which is just funny:
When they meet Guillaume again, he's alone, sitting against a tree near the edge of a copse, covered in blood. "They're dead," he confirms. "Hunter?"
"He's dead, too," says Casey.
"Figures."
