Rising out of the turquoise waters of Al Aqqah - Fujairah, Snoopy Island and its surrounding vibrant coral reef is a haven for both divers and snorkelers alike!
This rocky outcrop, so named for its shape’s resemblance to the cartoon character ‘Snoopy the Dog’, is situated in a protected marine National Park, just 200 m out from the pristine coastline. With fishing prohibited here, marine life thrives in staggering abundance.
Snoopy Island is not just a dive site, the warm shallow waters close to the shore also make it ideal for snorkelling. A combination of several habitats including shallow coral gardens, deeper rocky slopes and sandy planes allows for marine life to flourish – a whole host of species can be encountered here. Both divers and snorkelers can expect to see both large and macro species – colourful reef fish such as butterflyfish, triggerfish, parrotfish, boxfish and many more abound around the vast gardens of hard and soft corals, while large schools of iridescent mackerel and fusiliers await in the depths. Other critters such as cuttlefish, moray eels, sting rays, torpedo rays, nudibranchs, squid and a whole host of other inhabitants can also be found.
It is perhaps 2 of the larger species that owe to the site’s popularity – Both sea turtles and reef sharks are frequent encounters here! Two endangered species of sea turtle (the Green and the Hawksbill) thrive in this protected habitat, and are often seen gliding effortlessly through the water seemingly unbothered by curious divers. Black-tipped reef sharks make for an exciting encounter for patient divers (or snorkelers) who keep aware of their surroundings when in the shallows. On a good day it is not uncommon to encounter both reef sharks and several turtles on the same trip, making Snoopy Island the ideal location for the ultimate diving or snorkelling adventure!
