The 720 is the first full-length lifestyle Air Max unit

While the Air Safari ushered Air units into pure lifestyle design more than 20 years ago, the technological advances of the 2010s have allowed for a new effort in all-day wear. The 720 Air unit contains more than 75 percent manufacturing waste

After 15 years at the top of the NBA, LeBron James’s athletic ability, relentless work ethic and maturity has set him apart among modern athletes. This mix befuddles opponents, and for Nike designer Jason Petrie, James’s longtime collaborator, it creates a series of evolving challenges, not least of which is the four-time MVP’s constant need for balancing support and weight in his shoe.

Petrie and the basketball footwear team at Nike know that each iteration of the LeBron line calls for fresh tools. With the new 16, the breakthrough tool is knit.

“The knit team at Nike are geniuses,” says Petrie. “I don’t use that term lightly. They are mathematical artists and have created a new knit for the 16 that is strong enough to contain LeBron and successfully reduces any layers in the overall build that could slow him down.”

The LeBron 16 introduces Battleknit 2.0, an evolved version of the scalloped knit featured on the Lebron 15. Its structure increases tensile strength (important to contain James’s lateral force on court) and it has an elegant finish matching James’s current style.

The LeBron 16’s other notable feature is its height. At the direction of James, Petrie formed the shoe with a lower collar, which allows the athlete to move more freely.

“The first thing we wanted to do was get a little lower in the cut of the shoe,” says James. “I wanted to get a little faster, ride a little bit closer to the court and be a little bit more dynamic.”

Petrie and team also added a new gusseted leather tongue, allowing for seamless entry into the shoe and for broader styling choices off court.

Underfoot, a simple evolution of the Max Air cushioning platform introduced in the LeBron 15 supports James’s dynamic desires. “LeBron liked the cushioning so much last year that we just focused on refining it,” says Petrie. “For this addition, we removed the tendril that connected the forefoot to the under-toe bag, and instead included an outrigger to create some additional support to complement the lower height.”

Initially released in 2015, the Air Jordan I Shattered Backboard (a never-before-seen colorway inspired by an exhibition game in Italy) became an instant classic. The shoe returns May 5 as the Air Jordan I Satin Shattered Backboard — in women’s sizing and using the same tumbled Sail leather on the mid-panel matched with new satin blocking and a translucent outsole.

Created by a team of Nike women’s designers, The 1 Reimagined collection realized all-new articulations of the Air Jordan I and Air Force 1. The Air Jordan I Rebel twisted the upper and lace system to the side and added a zipper, creating a new mashup of heritage, style and function. After debuting in a neutral Cream White colorway and coming later in a tonal Cinder Orange, the Air Jordan I Rebel now adopts one of the colorways most deeply associated with AJI history, the Chicago Red/Black/White.

Eliud Kipchoge, the fastest marathoner ever, has called Nike’s 4% system (described below) “perfect…really perfect.” Members of the media have proclaimed that it fuels the “fastest shoe on the planet,” a statement backed up by a domination of world marathons (claiming 19 top finishes at the six core world races) in 2017.

Created in conjunction with Breaking2, the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% was designed with the goal of helping the world’s fastest marathoners run their best. It features Nike ZoomX foam (which is ultra-lightweight, soft and capable of providing up to 85-percent energy return) and an embedded a full-length curved carbon fiber plate (that increases stiffness to provide a sensation of propulsion). Together, these features deliver an average of 4-percent improvement in running economy when compared to Nike’s previous fastest racing flat.

Since the shoe launched and hit retail in July of 2017, it has moved off shelves with equal pace. On April 11, it will be available again in a new Obsidian/Metallic colorway in North America, China and Japan at the following retailers:
