A snake forced hundreds of passengers off a train in Switzerland while police searched for the reptile. The 50cm (non-venomous) garter snake was spotted by commuters as they boarded the early morning service from Bern to the northern city of Basel. They alerted staff of the fugitive reptile, who in turn called Swiss police.

All 450 passengers on the train were evacuated.

It is thought a passenger had brought the snake on board, ruling out the possibility it made its way onto the train on its own. All 450 passengers were transferred to another train that left around half an hour later. Police finally caught the snake in a ventilation shaft, Bern police said in a statement.
