You´re suddenly so unbelievably aware of him, of how wide his shoulders are, about the span of his chest as he stretches his upper body out. He manages to hijack one of the popcorn bowls and a bag of salted caramel M&M's, your recent obsession. He noticed.Â
The room is completely quiet as the first movie spools through, the only communication is when Damien silently offers you something. Popcorn, water, sour gummies.Â
At some point his fingers find the blanket you´ve splayed over your legs, tugging it slightly to ask permission to share. You glance at him in the dark, the whites of his eyes glowing differently. You pull the edge of the blanket out from under you and hand it to him.Â
You swallow as you feel him shift closer to you, using the blanket as his cover. Now your leg is brushing against his, your elbows knocking together as you stuff your faces.Â
As the movie comes to an end, you realize that you haven't actually watched it, all too aware of how he felt against you.Â
He gets up to go to the bathroom, and you join the discussion between Trevor and Angela on whether âa nightmare before christmasâ is more a halloween or christmas movie. You don´t actually care about either answer, but it´s fun to see the way the two of them get each other riled up.Â
âdude it's literally about how Jack would rather be a part of Christmas than Halloween, it is a Christmas movieâ Angela argues, resting her elbows on her bean bag so she can use her hands to gesture wildly.Â
âOkay but he's from Halloween and he is a literal skeleton so like, Halloweenâ Trevor argues back, almost giving Angela a moment to interrupt but he continues anyway, âplus it's a Tim Burton movie, all of his stuff is Halloweenâ
âFirst of all, that is quite literally not true. And second of all it's literally like the Grinch. He thinks he likes one thing until he discovers the magic of Christmas - would you call the Grinch a Halloween movie too?âÂ
âFirst of all, The Grinch discovered the magic of love and friendship, dumbass. Second of all, Halloween isn't mentioned a single time in the Grinch so that arguments holds like zero weightâÂ
âi can not believe you just called me a dumbass and tried to mansplain the Grinch to me-âÂ
â-i was NOT mansplaining!âÂ
âomg shut up the both of youâ Chanse finally cut in, not even dragging his attention away from scrolling his phone.Â
âthats so rudeâÂ
â you guys are left alone for like 5 minutes and i come back to a third world warâ you finally hear Damien's voice behind you.Â
He finds his seat again, this time nestling a little closer to you. He leans back against the cushions, resting both his arms on the back of the couch. His right arm coincidentally ends up behind your head.Â
âomg Damien!" finally - okay listen to this, Trevor, thinks that nightmare before christmas is an actual Halloween movieâ
Angela lays out the whole argument for Damien, and much to her dismay, he ends up siding with Trevor. You stifle your laugh, deciding to lean back and observe this time. Â
"Why?" "How?"Â
âwell first of all, its a Tim Burton project-âÂ
"Thank you!" thats what i saidâÂ
âoh shut upâÂ
Ian finally broke in, âalright kids settle down, settle down, we are now starting the second movie of the night okay? so shut your faces pleaseâÂ
He flicks off the light, and once more you are enveloped in the comforting darkness of the warehouse. You sink further into the cushions, as does Damien.Â
After about 15 minutes of the film flickering across the screen, he leans a little back, his back resting against your shoulder.Â
âheyâ he whispers to you.Â
âhey backâÂ
âWhat's your favorite horror movie?âÂ
You smile at him, amused. You mull the question over for a moment, before landing on your final answer. âi know its totally cliche, but i think that The Conjuring are some of the best horror movies ever madeâÂ
âthat´s just because you're in love with Vera FarmigaâÂ
You chuckle quietly, before you return his question back to him. You can´t help but continue the conversation, shooting questions back and forth in hushed tones.Â
The inquisitive conversation drifts into jokes about the movie. It's a good movie but it contains all of the cliche and classic tropes of any and all horror flicks.Â
About halfway in you reach the âgoing into the basement aloneâ scene. Damien leans further into the couch, leaning his shoulder against yours.Â
âAny moment now, something is going to pop out of those shadows, and she´s gonna try to run out and the door will slam right in her faceâ he whispers to you.Â
You giggle quietly, even more so when he turns out to be right.Â
âhow much you wanna bet that the youngest sister will wake up in the middle of the night and realize she´s totally floating?âÂ
âoh undeniably soâ
The two of you couldn´t help but giggle even more, when the prophecy ended up fulfilling itself. As the movie nears its end, you eye the bag of sour gummies on the table, you lean forward, reaching over Damien to grab it.Â
You just barely catch the way his breath stutters as your waist hovers over his lap, and in a maniacal lapse of judgement, you stall the moment. You pretend that you´re not sure what you want from the table, just to see the way he adjusts in his seat, hand coming up to scratch the back of his head.Â
You finally grab the bag of gummies, and slink slowly back into your seat.Â
When the movie finally reaches its end with only one character mildly injured, you decide to get some air.Â
You catch Angela on your way to the door, and she trails after you, out into the cool night breeze.Â
âAre you sure you're comfy in those beanbags? that can't be good for your neck?â you ask her, and she beams at the concern in your voice.Â
âyeah im totally good, i feel like a baby bird in its nestâÂ
You stretch your arms out for a moment, twisting your back and rolling your neck to get the stiffness out of your muscles. You pause when you notice the way she's looking at you, like there´s something she wants to say, but she's not quite sure it's the right time.Â
"What?"Â
She shakes her head in a faux nonchalant matter, glancing away from you. âits nothing important or anything, i've just noticed some stuffâÂ
"Yeah? like what?âÂ
She finally drags her eyes back to yours, âi dont wanna make things weird or like, assume i know whats going on when i dont actuallyâÂ
âokay now you're being cryptic and weird, just tell me what's on your mindâÂ
She sighs out a chuckle, âokay im totally being dramatic, its literally just girly conversation, but is there something more going on with you and Damien?âÂ
And there it is, the question of all questions. No one had actually asked you this before, not even yourself, and suddenly you were forced to actually think about the answer.Â
âI'm not sureâ you settle on, and she tilts her head.Â
She remains quiet, allowing you to continue if you want to. âi feel like we've gotten closer and closer, and there's definitely some flirty undertones, but im honestly not sureâÂ
She observes you for a moment, âcan i just, like tell you what i've observed so far?âÂ
âsure baby, lay it on meâÂ
She giggles, clasping her hands together like she´s a detective about to debrief her colleagues. âokay so i've known this man for like three years now, and while he's usually comfortable and open with others, this is different from how I've seen him beforeâÂ
Your stomach flips, and you let it.Â
âhow soâÂ
She makes a vague gesture with her hands as she tries to put her thoughts into words. âI mean it´s not like he's uncomfortable with physical touch but he certainly tolerates it more than he seeks it, but with you, he does seek it outâÂ
You squint at her but she continues, âno im serious! I always see him with his hand on your back or around your wrist or touching you somehow. And you guys have like a whole routineâÂ
"A routine?"Â
âyes! a routine! you guys eat breakfast and lunch together, you make coffee for each other, you give each other snacks and those little gifts and you practically do everything togetherâ she recites.Â
Something about having all of your actions recited to you was startling, you hadn´t realized that everyone else would be able to observe you like this. That they would be able to take in your actions and your patterns, and then form a conclusion about it.Â
âAm I freaking you out?â the anxiousness dripping from her voice made your eyes snap back to her immediately. You reach your hands out to grip her forearms, âno, no its okay, its not you its me, swearâ you tell her.Â
âIt's not me, it's you?âÂ
âits not you, its meâÂ
You laugh with her, and it eases the weight on your chest. âi just haven't really thought about this, i mean not actively, it's just sort of lingered at the back of my mindâÂ
She opens her mouth to speak again, but rapidly closes it when Ian slams the door open, and gives the two of you a look that much resembled a concerned father.Â
âwe´re starting the third movie girls, come inside pleaseâÂ
âokayyyâ the two of you sing-song together, you shoot her a secret look as you pass through the door.Â
She grazes your elbow gently, âlets have a coffee next week and talk about itâÂ
âyes pleaseâÂ
âtalk about what?âÂ
You startle right out of your skin, spinning around to face the very man of the hour. "Nothing! lets get back to our seats before the movie startsâÂ
You quickly grab his wrist and drag him back towards the couch, pulling him down with you into the corner of the couch.Â
âWhat's the rush?â he laughs at you, and you feel his warmth seep into your skin. He grabs the blanket you were previously curled up under, spreading it over you once more, and sneaking under it himself.Â
You shrug in what you hope is a nonchalant manner, âi just didn't wanna miss the start of the movie, it's the last one after allâÂ
He shoots you a suspicious look, but doesn't push it any further. Instead he leans back into the couch, and you fall backwards with him. Only this time, you didn´t move.Â
Once again, you feel awfully aware of him. Your shoulder is overlapping his, you´re not cuddling exactly, but you´re sitting closer than what is appropriate for friends.Â
When the light is suddenly turned off, and the movie starts, you feel his breathing. With every raise and fall of his chest, your body follows. It's barely intimate yet you feel your whole body reacting to his. It's a stark realization that you want him much closer.Â
As the movie trails along, you feel your eyes grow heavy. You slide further down into the couch, settling your elbow on the back of the couch so you can rest your head in your hand.Â
The entire week's worth of work suddenly seeps into your bones, weighing them down and allowing the sleepy chills to trickle across your arms and backs. You've been spending the vast majority of your hours at the office, rushing down the halls or slumped in front of your computer.Â
You´re madly in love with your job, there is absolutely no doubt about that. Never in your life had you felt so comfortable in a workplace. You were working yourself to pieces of course, but you adored every single piece, favored them and savored them.Â
Your favorite part was your coworkers of course, these people had become your close friends. You enjoyed their company endlessly.Â
At some point, you fall asleep. You don't really notice it, at some point you stop paying attention to the screams of fear from the TV and slip into a peaceful slumber.Â
A particularly loud scream echoes from the TV and you flinch awake. The TV light is way too bright, and you hide your eyes behind the palm of your hand. It's when you pull your hand up to your face, that you realize something is off.Â
You feel the heavy weight around your hip, the warmth enveloping your upper body. You peek between your fingers, slowly removing your hand from your face. You immediately recognize the print of Damien's hoodie, mere inches from your face.Â
Oh god. OhgodohgodhogodohgodohgodÂ
There was no way you had done this. There was absolutely no way that you had fallen asleep on your colleagues chest, surrounded by all of your other colleagues. You scrunch your eyes shut, before opening them again.Â
And then, you slowly peek around you. Your eyes fall between your friends and colleagues, and much to your surprise, no one is looking at you.Â
You watch them for a few moments, and none of them as much as glance in your direction. You slowly allow yourself to relax, and you realize that also means sinking further into his side.Â
You´re tucked under his arm, your head resting against the top of his chest. Your hand is resting beside your head, and you feel the pattern of his breathing under your palm. His arm is slung along your spine and curved around to rest on your hip. He hadn't just let his hand fall wherever it ended up, instead it was wrapped around your hipbone, fingers curved into the soft skin.Â
Your breath stuttered in your throat, at how good it felt, how right it felt. You blush an unbelievable shade of red when you suddenly feel him squeeze you, obviously aware that you were awake, and trying to get your attention without alerting anyone else.Â
You slowly sit up in your seat, not quite getting yourself out of his grasp and turn to face him. His eyes were impossibly deep in the dark shadows, he looked at you through his eyelashes, gently tracing your features with his stare.Â
You make the first move to speak, âim sorry i feel asleep on youâÂ
He chuckles quietly, "that's okay, it was nice actuallyâÂ
You flush even further. You feel his breath fan across the hot skin, and you realize how close you´re actually sitting to him.Â
You wanted to kiss him so bad. But you didn't.Â
"I can't believe you didnt kiss himâÂ
You were getting a severe scolding from Angela. You, her and Chanse were out for brunch the following Sunday morning. Just two days after the movie night. You had elected to be completely honest with her about your feelings, and by extent that meant Chanse also got the rundown of your confusing situation.
âoh come on Angela we were all sitting around them like spectators, of course she didn't kiss him at our workâ Chanse argued, and you squeezed his wrist in appreciation. Â
âOkay fair, whateverâ she leaned back in her seat and observed you for a moment, âwill you ever kiss him though?âÂ
She asked you the question that you weren't quite ready to answer just yet. But it was one that you had considered greatly.Â
The two of you were friends, that was the first obstacle that needed to be considered. Of course a genuine and healthy friendship was usually a great building block for a good relationship.Â
Furthermore, you two worked together. You saw him every single day, you guided him through his work, you were his supervisor in some way. This was the first job you ever really loved, the first time you felt valued and respected for all of the things you did all day long.Â
Were you willing to possibly sacrifice that for a relationship that might work?
You weren´t sure what you wanted anymore.Â
