Under the full moon, a pair of giant bats were carefully picking their way through the woodland undergrowth, sniffing carefully for the berries and wildflowers they were after. Tuesday half-carried, half-dragged a plastic bucket in her left hand, and Ruby carried a burlap sack safety-pinned to the back of her tattered hospital gown. “I smell someone different,” Ruby said quietly. “They’re not a dog or a squirrel.”
“How many?” Tuesday asked. “Just one, I think.”
Tuesday set down her bucket and stood up on her feet, looking around upwind. “Hello?” she called. “Is someone there? Are you nice?”
