I’ve decided to have #WorldPeaceWednesdays where I talk about stories of activism, activism tips, activist organizations, and stories of successful peaceful change.
Have you ever had a burning issue that you want to contact your elected representatives about, but don’t have the time every month to attend meetings or contact them on a regular basis? You still are passionate about the issue, but life’s priorities get in your way of being politically active.
I have a hack for you that will allow you to participate without actually having to think about it more than once for about 30 minutes.
The township board in Downers Grove township where I live has never had a Democrat on the board. The Republicans on the board offered Zoom broadcasts of their meetings during the pandemic. The ones I was at were well attended. The live meetings not so much.
The township does a lot to serve the elderly in the community so I think they should bring back the Zoom meetings so the elderly people the township serves don’t have to go to the meetings in person.
Former Republican Illinois governor, Bruce Rauner, enacted an Executive Order in 2018 eliminating nepotism in state hiring. It is a known fact that at least one family member of an elected township official works for the Downers Grove township and receives one of the highest paid salaries for his position in the state. There are rumors that other family members have been hired as well.
I have not been able to attend these meetings. I usually would get up at public comment and air my grievances, but you can also email comment in so that the supervisor reads it into record. So I scheduled my email to send the township supervisor the following message once a month for the next 3 years, so that the supervisor can read it for himself out loud at the meetings and I don't even need to think about it.
In 2018, then Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed an Executive Order abolishing nepotism in state government hiring. I urge the Downers Grove Township Board to adopt a similar policy.
Also, many of the people who benefit from the township's services are elderly and it is difficult for them to attend meetings sometimes. For transparency and in consideration of those who use its services, I believe that the township should go back to offering Zoom meetings as an option.
(You're welcome, Democrats! Should be an easy thing to point out they have not instituted a nepotism policy in 4 years by 2025.)
You can do this hack too! Just type up your email. Then select all and copy the text. Paste and save the text in a Word or .txt or Google Keep, so you can easily copy and paste it into emails later.
Go back to the email you were preparing and go into Schedule Send in your email application and schedule the post for when you want it to send. I scheduled mine to go out just before the monthly meeting.
Then go back and create another email. Just paste the text in the body, type or copy & paste your subject, and schedule your send for next month (or week or day) at the same time. Continue repeating the procedure until you have scheduled your emails for however long you think it will take to resolve your issue. It took me about 20-30 minutes to scheduled 3 years worth of emails.
