The Scott Smajor Discourse
(CW for mentions of racism, sexualization, and a small mention of false accusations of homophobia)
I've only posted reblogs so far about this because I do not believe I have any say on this matter because I, myself, am a white person. I do not have the insight on my own to say if his pantheon smp design is inherently racist or not.
I do, however, see how much it is upsetting people who are actually apart of the cultures that are implied in the design, so there is clearly a problem there. Whether it is intended or not.
I do agree to a high extent with a take I saw and reblogged, saying that people can be racist on accident. Again, I can't say for sure if this was an accident or intentional on Scott's part and would heavily suggest you seek out the opinion of someone of the cultures being represented instead of someone who can't say for sure. Scott has played flirty characters before, and is doing so again. Is he sexualizing the cultures being represented in his design? I can't say for sure. I truly do not know.
And I know we, as a community, are going to have varied takes on this matter, but I don't think anyone here is trying to be homophobic(coming from someone who is apart of the lgbtq+ community)?? I saw a post from a mutual of mine saying that people were taking their criticisms as them not liking that Scott is gay and I genuinely wish I could say I'm surprised about this reaction.
People have always reacted like this towards people criticizing their favorite creators. I can understand the need to be defensive of a creator you enjoy or might even find comfort in, as no one wants to admit that a creator they've been following for possibly years is a bad human being, but immediately jumping to unsupported conclusions about a person because they criticized said creator for a legitimate issue is never the correct way to go. I believe this should also be addressed in the discourse because this is a BAD, REOCCURRING HABIT OF THE MCYT COMMUNITY.
I genuinely thought we would grow out this after the earlier years of this decade, but that isn't what this is about.
Back to the actual discourse, I think the design should be changed. If it is angering this many people, especially those who are apart of the cultures represented, there must be something wrong about the design.
I do not personally believe Scott is racist, or at least was trying to be while designing and describing his character, but I must remind again that I am the wrong person to ask for a definitive answer on if Scott Smajor is a racist or not.
For all I know, I could be proven wrong.
And if that happens, good. Like I mentioned back during the whole Avid situation, I would rather learn a creator is a bad person and stop supporting them than continue to support them in ignorance or—anyone forbid—denial.
With this being said, no, I will not be watching Scott's POV during pantheon until this is cleared up for sure. I will also not draw fanart of the character due to the design. I will, however, talk about the character and possibly mention the character in fanworks if mine since we still aren't sure.
(if this has any mistakes you are more than welcome to correct me respectfully!!)
IMPORTANT EDIT: I've been informed in my asks that Scott apparently apologized and I will look into that, I had just learned of the discourse and was seeing how it was affecting people and wanted to comment about that. I heavily appreciate the corrections as I wouldn't have known this as quickly without it
