“Look if you broke your ankle, no one would expect you to keep walking on it, until it healed - if you’re having a mental health crisis, Stay. Away. from people who expect you to keep doing the things you’ve always done without a period to heal, and without properly structured support. People who hurt their bodies might need physio to learn to walk or use their arms again, and when they say "I can’t get up those steps right now” no one questions if they’re just unwilling or unmotivated. If you say “I can’t do that today” you should never have to experience accusations of simply not trying hard enough, you should have the same people you’d have if it was your body that was broken instead, people who say “that’s okay, I know it’s scary or difficult but let’s do it together!” people who respect barriers without calling you defeatist. Again, if someone is sick and a medication isn’t working, does everyone just give up and say oh well guess you’re just gonna be sick then? No, they try a different medication, they approach the situation with a new remedy. You need the same thing, the brain is an organ and it can get sick and malfunction like any other, you need people who will say “I know you can’t do *that* today, that’s okay, let’s try *this* instead and come back to *that* another day.” Seriously back the fuck away from anyone who doesn’t treat mental illness like any other illness.“
– Important things I was told, in response to a rant about feeling ashamed of not always meeting expectations.
