What do ou think is going to happen with Assata Shakur now that the US is "resuming" diplomatic relations with the Cuban Government? So far the Cuban government has refused to extradite her. But I think that for the FBI there is a particular interest to demonstrate (particularly to the black population) that dissidence and radical activism is always punished. I would ask about the economic effects but that merits another discussion(s).
I think they’re going to continue to refuse the extradition requests, not specifically out of any revolutionary commitment, but out of the incongruity it would introduce in Cuban propaganda. They’ve spent 50 years portraying their government as a staunch bastion of anti-American imperialism and her as a revolutionary against that same force. At the same time, they also know she’ll die relatively soon (average lifespan for black women in America is 77 and she’s 67) so the extradition requests will stop. The Cuban government I believe understands that this warming of relations is driven by economic forces, not ideological ones, and anything like this won’t be more than a minor stumbling block to getting those sweet investment dollars and that sweet technology transfer. I think just her living in exile is a powerful enough force, same as Snowden being in exile is working wonders against potential state secret leakers. The cops might be able to block a burial in America after death or something though.
