A MASSIVE FUCKING WARNING TO GW2 MAPBREAKERS, with details
So i just got permabanned without a single fucking warning (I know we donât get warnings, we get temp bans. I didnât.)
For what? For breaking a fucking map. Thatâs right. For using the re-log glitch to get past obstacles. I was not aware it was a bannable offense. There is nothing on the internet suggesting this. This is incidentally absolutely disgusting and blood-boilingly unfair if you ask me, as there is literally no way glitch-skipping alone can harm the game, but that is not the point of this post. I might make another post with the details later. The point is to warn yâall because I know a lot of you like mapbreaking. Apparently, if you get caught intentionally doing it, this happens. No warning. Nothing.
Signal boost for awareness + arenanetâs disgusting conduct.
Alright, since this has gotten more publicity than I thought it would, here are the details.
I was exploring the unnamed, unfinished jumping puzzle in Caledon Forest (if you know the one, good, if you donât, donât go there. This can happen to you too). Since I like to discover everything for myself, I, as usual, refused to look up how to do this. All I had was a hint of the location and the requirement of Experimental Rifles from Malchorâs Leap. I guessed that the relog displacement thing (Iâll explain below why I think itâs actually not a glitch) would also help.
As a result of this, the entire affair took a very long time, approximately 4 hours, interrupted by a karka queen fight. I managed to get into the actual area of the JP, but soon discovered that I could not get into the second room. After this, looking around in the first room, I discovered a hole in the terrain (by accidentally falling into it) and ending up where mapbreakers normally do, in the water below the map. Now, as I had screenshots from within the other rooms from other people, and had (still donât have) no knowledge of a different method for getting past solid walls, I assumed theyâd used the relog thing, which I started doing.
Several hours of swimming and relogging and messing around later, after Iâd managed to get into every single one except the second, I was just getting ready to wp out and log off, when I got the ban message. No warning, nothing.
I thought Iâd never post these screenshots, but hereâs a few of them for proof.
^This was where the jp ended prematurely, btw.
Afterwards, I sent a support ticket, twice appending it later with all the details about what I had been doing. I am unsure if I should post the original ban notice and my ticket, it might get me into more trouble??? Idk. The one you see above is the response I got. The original notice claimed I was using a âthird party programâ, while the response just says âa cheat or exploitâ, as you can see, but I donât think it matters. I donât know how to prove I wasnât using any extra program, but... I wasnât. Like, why would I, the relog thing was there, and why would I need a hack for this trivial kind of stuff. I literally just wanted to explore this place. I had been prepared to give up several times when i couldnât find how to progress, too. I guess I should have done that. Welp.
About the relog thing, I have realized itâs very likely not actually a glitch, but an algorithm. A purposefully implemented algorithm that repositions characters from awkward places upon logging in. I have come to observe that it doesnât necessarily place you a step forward, but, if youâre stuck or on a ledge or something, it puts you in the closest stable space. Itâs not a glitch, because it behaves smartly. If you were in a stable space when you logged out, you wonât move. See the big globe in the second pic? I got displaced from below the entire thing, water, bedrock and all, on top of that globe.
Anyway, the point of all this is, I understand if I get punished, even banned for this. What I donât understand is, if there exists a temp ban and a permaban, several classes of offense severity, and Iâm a first offender and long standing player... was it really necessary to give me a permaban right away? For this effectively entirely harmless offense? Especially considering how many other people have been doing it, including WoodenPotatoes in public videos, Iâm told? I didnât manage to find out whether the GMs had a problem with mapbreaking itself, or the relog thing, which people also routinely use to get into non-instance Salma, for example. So... yeah. ???????????????
The issue has been resolved and turned out to be an error in judgment on Anetâs part. Thank you to everyone who helped spread this.
