I really want people to know about why in Slavic languages some mythical beings are prefixed with "dedo" and "baba".
These words mean "grandpa" and "grandma" respectively.
For example "Dedo Mraz" means "Grandfather Frost" and it's how in most Slavic language Santa Clause is called.
And "Baba Yaga" literally means "Grandmother Dread".
The reason behind this choice of words comes from the ancient Slavic religion. These beings, demons, spirits, were immortal and so old, ancient, much older than the person who encountered them. And so just as you would address your elders, you addressed them with "dedo" (grandpa) and "baba" (grandma).
Anyway, Grandfather Frost, the demon who lured little children with the wonderful snow into the forest where they froze to death, converted to Christianity, and feeling remorse now brings them gifts to atone for his sins.
