The connection between snakes and the chief Slavic feminine divinity is visible in the belief that snakes have a queen, serpent-skarapeya, who possesses supernatural qualities. She is the mistress of snakes and the forest, keeper of treasures, wise and all-knowing. The function of the snake is close to the function of the mistress of animals and of the forest, the cult of which can be traced to Palaeolithic era, as noted by B. Rybakov.
