Overlooking the majestic Annapurna Range lies our project site for Kalagaun residence, situated at the altitude of 1350m.
The design intent was to transform this terraced abandoned farmland with an existing building into a comfortable residential house. One of the main considerations for the design was the solar path and wind direction.
Materiality wise, we looked towards this district’s age-old culture of building with stones while using steelwork by a local manufacturer to provide lightness and a more sustainable alternative to timber.
The stones were sourced and chiseled locally by the mason team and lime-improved mud mortar was used for the walls. The lighter wattle and daub infill wall between the steel framework help to balance the heavy stone walls. Beautiful slate-work forms the roof cover for this house, thanks to a great building team from Bandipur.
The design has incorporated additional factors of thermal comfort by using double glazing doors and window and a water harvesting strategy via the roof of the house.
