Sky Express was a Russian low-cost airline that made history as the first true budget carrier on the domestic market. The airline was founded in 2006 and launched commercial flights in January 2007, modelling itself on European and American low-cost carriers — with streamlined service, minimal ticket prices, and a focus on high aircraft utilisation.
The route network was built around domestic destinations from Moscow, primarily to resort cities and regional centres. The airline operated Boeing 737 family aircraft, which were well suited to the low-cost concept thanks to their fuel efficiency and reliability.
Despite its pioneering spirit, Sky Express faced fierce competition and operational difficulties. In 2011 the airline ceased operations, but its role as a trailblazer in affordable air travel in Russia remains undeniable.
A special place in Sky Express history belongs to the Boeing 737-300 registered VP-BBN — this particular aircraft was the airline's very first. Before joining the Russian fleet, it carried the temporary FAA registration number N527AD. The aircraft embodied the project's ambitious launch and became a symbol of a new era in Russian civil aviation. It also caught the attention of scale model manufacturers: Eastern Express released a 1:144 scale kit, including a decal with the N527AD registration. Another company, JC Wings, produced a 1:200 scale collector's model — also featuring the American registration number.
Originally, the poster featuring this aircraft was also drawn with the N527AD registration — such was the client's wish. Once I had fulfilled that order, I added to my collection the same aircraft, but this time with the VP-BBN registration, since that was the number it carried for the rest of its operational life. Both versions of this aircraft are available to order, along with more than seven hundred other posters.
