--In Greek mythology, Apollo, the sun god, and Zephyr, god of the west wind, competed for a young boy’s affections. As Apollo was teaching Hyakinthos how to throw the discuss, Zephyr, in a jealous rage, blew a gust of wind in Apollo’s direction. This sent the discuss hurling back in the direction of Hyakinthos, striking and killing him. Apollo, broken hearted, noticed that a flower had sprung from the blood that was spilled and named the flower ‘hyacinth’ in honor of the boy. 

My entry for the Dunkirk art challenge prompt: “Character + flower.” I chose George, as I felt that, out of all the stories in the film, his is indeed the most tragic. I know we were probably meant to choose just one flower, but I felt as though the three I chose represented him, and his story, the most. For some reason, the story of Hyakinthos reminded me of George, or rather, George reminded me of the story.
