So now that the moving is over, I can finally ramble about it. Can’t post on FB simply because family tends to overreact. Long story short; it worked out.
I have a tough time moving. Not because of emotional attachment or anything like that, but because it’s a lot of people all at once, doing multiple things, handling my stuff, out of my eye sight for lengthy amounts of time. I trust my friends, they’re painfully careful with my things and generous to the end (all of them took their days off to help me pack, move, and clean the old apartment).
What I don’t trust is my attitude. I warned them all ahead of time. “I will be cranky. I will be quiet so I don’t get snappy. I will give you extremely short and concise answers.” Because I know myself and I cannot control people, but I can control myself and that’s how I cope.
I did end up butting heads with my new roomies because my partner and I had a lot of things to pack up and move. A lot. A whole APARTMENT’S worth of things, over the last five years. Our roomies? They had a room and some things in the garage of their parents place. I explained it once and then twice to the roomies, who were getting snappish and a bit frustrated with how long it was taking ME to move.
“I lived here for FIVE YEARS. It’s a home, not a bedroom.”
I was also being waspish myself because despite having all my friends around me to help, I didn’t have my partner. I realized some things. I know these things about myself, but the moving really hammered them home. For all that I am independent and self-governing, Geoff is a HUGE buffer between me and the things that irritate me. He’s my haven, and it slammed home when the move was over.
He couldn’t be around to help because he just started a new job and he couldn’t take the day off. Well, he could, but it was training and this was his first job that wasn’t fast food or retail and like hell I was going to give them any reason to mark it against him. I told him I would be fine. I was, for the most part. But when he finally came home, I felt so much relief I nearly cried.
Even one of my other friends mentioned it. She and her partner were outside with some furniture (so sticky fingers wouldn’t get ideas) and he came home and greeted them. My friend told me that when I stepped outside and saw Geof, my face lit up like the sun and it was the first smile I wore all day. I hugged him for a good five minutes, I was so happy.Â
Apparently my friends also snitched to him that aside from a donut and some water, I hadn’t eaten anything. I was immediate jailed to the bedroom with food and water and told to stay put, and Geof handle the rest. He managed to calm down the ruffled feathers of our roomies about the lack of space or the boxes, and he also organized the living space quickly so that everyone could breathe a little and not feel cluttered.Â
God bless the person I married, because I wouldn’t have had the strength by the end of the day.Â
