16 January 2020 - Chris Hong Portrait Drawing #7 (Such small 1% level ups but I just gotta be patient and be grinding away...because I can see that the practise is helping even if it is small)
So I can see the small improvements when comparing my most recent portrait study with the first one, definitely it has more Chris Hong vibes. At the same time I still feel frustrated when comparing my drawings to the reference photo, and I can immediately pick out the incorrect proportions or a wonky facial feature. It just makes me want to straight away start again the drawing until I can get it looking perfect and or at least to the level Chris Hong is currently at. But I am reminding myself of the advice that is always given to people at the beginning of their craft; it takes time and practise (that was so cheesy just then writing this even though it is so true).
I’m thinking the next step for me in terms of improving my fundamentals is that I need to take a step back and look even more at the super suuuper basics and fundamentals; understand how the anatomy of the head and the face works before I’m drawing what’s on the surface.
Just to end on a positive note though, what I think did go well was my drawing process. Even though the proportions still weren’t there in the final drawing I was more considerate when making marks; I studied the reference photo more than I did in previous studies trying to figure out where to put features in relation to other landmarks of the face. Just gotta keep this practise up and I will slowly strengthen my skills in drawing the proportions more accurately. Another small win I am definitely claiming is that the nose and lips for this study for sure has more of that three dimensional quality that Chris Hong’s drawings has which I really really wanted to emulate.
