100 Themes Writing Challenge
Why do I doubt what you’re saying?
She didn’t say this aloud, of course—she may not have known exactly what he was, but she knew he did have the potential to do some real damage—but she was thinking it. She knew that he wasn’t really the most reliable source at the theatre, but he was one that wasn’t quite so easily annoyed by her lack of understanding.
“Sure you got all that?”
She nodded, tucking blonde hair behind one pointed ear. “Yes, I think so.”
He nodded himself, offering her a more than slightly patronizing smile. “Good. Now I have other business to attend to. Stay out of trouble, y’hear?”
Nodding again, she watched him walk off before getting up herself and going in search of someone to verify—or disprove—what she’d just been told.
The accuracy actually wasn’t too far off—human mythology—though it could just be a matter of personal opinion. She was sure that if she were to go and ask someone else that they’d tell a similar story, but the acclaimed ‘bad guy’ would be someone different from the one she’d just been told about.
“No way to really judge accuracy, then?”
“No, not really. It’ll be the same story with the same characters no matter who you ask. All that changes is point of view, really.”
Sighing, she nodded. “Thanks, though. Was worth a shot, at least, right?”
