On Saturday Sister headed into the “wombiverse” with Caitlin Moran, Bridget Christie and Shazia Mirza – three famously opinionated and hilarious women – to discuss feminism in the modern world for the WOW Festival. 

The range of topics were varied to say the least. From women being repressed, cyber bullying, racism and unrealistic expectations, to the meaning of the “f” word and body hair - they managed to cover it all. 

Caitlin discussed herlightbulb moment, saying one of the greatest things holding women back is being told time and again “we don’t do that”. She believes that when this sentence is uttered, a "yet” should be added on the end. Caitlin wants women to question why things are the way they are and see what they can do to change it.

Shazia talked about how she’s continually being asked to comment on Muslim culture. One BBC ex head of religion even asked her to “Muslim up a bit” an article she had written. 

Bridget, on the other hand, brought to the fore online abuse. She said, any woman who starts to make a name for herself will suffer for it, with Caitlin adding you aren’t a famous woman if you haven’t had an online death threat. Whilst the speakers had different takes on how to deal with trolls (Caitlin prefers to simply add “your Mum” to the end of whatever the troll’s saying), both agreed, anyone who’s an online troll is a sad person who has no power in their own life and so they try to gain power online.

Filled with sharp wits, this discussion about female rights had the audience in stitches with no topic off limits.
