The Protogenesis of Siryl
Siryl, my main blog, is named after a character from a dream I had during college. It wasn't a meaningful vision or anything; I just needed a name I could remember that wasn't being used by anyone else on Tumblr. I recently noticed an interesting passage in The Science in Science Fiction by Peter Nicholls, a book I remember checking out in high school.
Unfortunately, because of their rather stony or metallic quality, most silicon-based life-forms in science fiction tend to resemble boulders or television aerials, and are thus more than a little boring. And, as the American chemist Cyril Ponnamperuma says, "If evolution could have used silicon, it would have made something out of silicon — there's a lot of silicon around" – a strong argument.
It seems likely that I read this and retained it on some level, and my subconscious produced a garbled version of the scientist's name in a dream several years later. That's my theory of why I met a talking cat named Siryl Pynnabbymshirik.
What's the difference between robotics and robotology?

Would you believe I don’t actually know what it’s like to grow up without the Internet? I spent most of my childhood in Vancouver, and ended up participating in one of the early pilot programs to extend Internet access to major elementary schools throughout the Vancouver area. That had to have been... around 1992, I guess? I know it was before web browsers really took off, because we mostly did things via telnet, but it was enough to browse online library catalogues and play ASCII poker with other kids and stuff.
