My second piece of art for this Springfest features a melancholy Thymara and a bullish Sintara. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve had to draw this many scales but it was nonetheless very rewarding and endlessly satisfying. Dragons are awesome!

thymara’s first chapter is chock-full of musings on “survival of the fittest” as a concept and what it means to be disabled in a world that doesn’t think you deserve to live. both thymara and the dragons are viewed as net losses, aka costing more than they’re worth to keep around. it’s objectively untrue in thymara’s case, since she’s a skilled hunter, but at this point it does seem that bingtown’s promise to care for the dragons could be more than they bargained for. not that i believe anyone has to justify their existence by performing the right amount of labor. nevertheless, the idea runs deep in bingtown culture, doubtless intensified by their history as a hostile colony where day-to-day survival was a challenge.

This is my fic for @springfest-rote! It was a lot of fun and stress at the same time to write. The wonderful @prophetandcatalyst drew an illustration for it, which you can see at the end of the work!

The prompt (be warned that the story doesn't follow it to the exact letter) was as follows:

A little after the events of Rain Wild Chronicles, Tats decides to surprise Thymara for her birthday - bring her parents to visit, unaware of the chaos it was going to bring. While Thymara's parents try to adapt and cope with how her daughter and the world has changed, Tats, Rapskal and Sintara react to getting to know Thymara's parents and especially her mother each in their own way. Everything results in a lot of people (and dragons), that have different views, being thrown into preparing for what seems to be one very chaotic birthday party.

I didn’t want it to end 😭 as someone who loves long journeys and dragons and books that focus entirely on character relationships and dynamics this series was perfect for me
