She takes a moment to let the question linger. Allowing a deep inhale to fill her lungs. Longing to exhale deep enough to escape the breath she feels she’s been holding since that fateful night they’d reconnected over the bar.

Hands move to grip at that tender spot on the back of her neck, she’d blame bad work posture if questioned, but if she knew anything about the man sitting next to her on the fire escape steps of her building it was that he generally knew better than to question her. 

( That was until now, and the sensation lingered in the air like a thick haze of city smog. )

“Isn’t it simple?” She questions, finally letting her breath escape as she glances sideways, her expression blank as she gently dampens her lower lip, years had passed since they were teens, they were both dating other people, both older, seemingly no wiser.

“If it's not fun anymore, we gotta stop. You can go back to your little white fence life. I’m not going to tell anyone.” It rolls off of the tongue easily, always does with her. Emotion has never been her forte when it came to him, always too busy filling her thoughts with not right now, it's not like that, we’re just friends. Ten years later, still just friends. Friends that spent Sunday mornings together ‘working out’, but seemingly never flagging new data on their Fitbit.
