sincerelyalyssa yeah I've read a couple!! I read a pretty popular one I'm blanking on the title rn omg but it was a diary format and Lily was really cute and quirky and James was a bit of a jerk but really endearing??? There was like a plotline where James dated this girl that he knew from his childhood and Lily had all these friends in her house... I think the title was like a made up word or a Latin word or something?? And I read a few after that but they all had similar plot lines and seemed like imitations that kind of paled in comparison :( WAIT commentarius maybe?? That might be the title???
Aw Dana I'm sad that you're ~officially~ leaving 1dff/5sos fic. I have always loved your beautiful poetry-like writing. I hope everything is going well for you love! (PS When you get the chance, I'd love to hear what the ending of DT was supposed to be hehe) xx
SO I FINALLY GOT TO THIS I’M SORRY ALYSSA!! but basically the ending for dt was supposed to be
louis/valerie end game. the gist of why zayn/valerie didn’t work out was because valerie realized she was only in love w the idea of zayn and not zayn as an actual person? and that by being w zayn, she was sort of.. not really growing as a person, do you know what i mean? there were so many expectations zayn had of her (that she needed to be protected, which is why he was initially going to turn down an internship in london) and valerie didn’t realize it until louis came along.
there was also going to be a cheap reference to louis singing “valerie” at one of their concerts in london and valerie backstage cracking a joke abt how she’d come on over or w/e lmao
Okay so idk if my ask sent bc internet but HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOVELY! I swear we will catch up soon (once school stops sucking) but until then, I hope you have a wonderful birthday. Love you and miss you! xx
THANK U ALYSSA ILYSM 💕😘 and yes yes we need a good catch up ahhh miss you toooooo
I’m following up my response on the obligation. (Warning, it got longer than I had intended, sorry!) I think the obligation is a bit more complicated on my part because though I do feel that obligation, there’s a few more maybe/maybe nots that I have to figure out before I do leave a review.
I have the general feeling of obligation because I think feedback is good and I want to acknowledge the author’s hard work and such and I want the author to know that at least someone out there is reading their work (because as an author, I hate when I feel like I’m writing into the void. I mean, it’s not a primary reason why I wrote but I am big on feedback and sometimes even an audience gives me motivation to keep writing).
So once I decide that yeah I’m gonna leave a review (after figuring out whether I’m going to commit to this fic, bc I am very picky about my fics), I’m not the one-line type of person. I will leave a long-winded one because as an author, I love when my readers interact with me and tell me their little thoughts. So I’ll answer all the author’s questions or make a comment on some facet of the chapter, at least letting them know I appreciate them and their story and their ideas. I have found that if I’m that kind of reader, I get those kinds of readers, which I absolutely love.
But then there’s the flip side. I have been getting increasingly busy with school and stuff since I started reading 1dff fic so if I don’t have time to read the 5k+ chapters AND leave a fitting review, then I won’t and tell myself I’ll do it later. But of course, there’s never a later so I stopped writing, reading, and leaving reviews. It’s all weird.
Sorry that ended up being so long! xx
all very good points, alyssa! i really like your analysis of obligation, i think it's really on point. i definitely like leaving longer reviews as opposed to shorter ones too. do you think you're more likely (this is a question for anyone/everyone) to review when the writer asks questions in the endnotes?
also: "i have found that if i'm that kind of reader, i get those kinds of readers." i've found that to be true as well. i've also become increasingly busy, and that's definitely a struggle.
thanks for sharing!!!

Hi Natasha! Your submit doesn't work so I'll try to make this brief. Generally if I like the story and want to keep it, I'll review it and probs be more enthusiastic if I know the author. If I don't review, it's because I don't plan on continuing and I'd rather not say anything at all (usually can't pinpoint why I don't like a certain fic/don't want to hurt the author's feelings). And lastly, I sort of feel obligated to leave one bc I know how it is as an author wanting to see numbers hah
Oh and the last question! I used to leave reviews on both the site and tumblr for authors I knew personally, but now I just leave a review on the site. Though lately, I haven't been leaving reviews so I feel a bit guilty hah
oh no, i just turned the submit on so it should be working now! thanks for letting me know.
so reviewing when you plan on keeping up with new chapters, not reviewing when you don't really have anything particular to say. i definitely understand feeling obligated to review in order to please the writer. i do wish that weren't the case, but i don't know how to get around that? a lot of the conversation we've had in the community about reviews says, "you should review to show appreciation for the writer, their time, their work, etc." which is justified and totally correct, but i wonder what readers get out of reviewing, or if they need to get something out of it in order to be motivated to do it.
i got a little bit off track there, oops. thanks for sharing your thoughts, alyssa!! :)
