“Beron is demanding an alliance between our families.”
“And why in the fuck would we ever do that?” Cass grunted.Â
“He's threatening the lives of…innocents,” Rhys answered. “If we don't agree, he's going to start killing people.” His eyes flickered to Elain, no doubt thinking of the twins.Â
“And what the fuck kind of alliance is he asking for?” Mor asked, crossing her arms.Â
Rhys cleared his throat again. “An alliance through marriage.”Â
“What do you-” Mor started, but cut herself off when she realized what he meant. “Oh, no. Fuck no.”
Rhys sighed. “Beron is demanding a marriage to Eris to ally our families. And he wants…” he cringed slightly as he delivered the final blow. “One of Feyre’s sisters.”Â
Az felt Elain’s entire body stiffen atop him as she whipped her head around to look at him. He just rested his forehead against her shoulder in defeat.Â
Cass stood up so aggressively his chair toppled over. “Fuck that,” he snarled so violently that both Lucien and Mor reeled back in astonishment.Â

Elain sat in the room she had been given at the Vanserra mansion, alone and in despair. The room was next door to where she had been held, bound and gagged, men with guns surrounding her. Leering at her near-naked body.
She wondered which of the dead sons’ rooms she now occupied. Was it Baylor, who had hid in her apartment and taken her? Whom she had shot in the throat? Or was it the one who had held Rhysand at gunpoint downstairs, before Lucien had thrown his knife at him? Or was it the third brother who had most likely died by Cassian’s bullet?
It didn’t matter, she supposed, a too-familiar grimness settling over her heart. She missed the cabin. She missed her apartment. She missed Nyx and her sisters and Mor. She missed her job and Nuala and Cerridwen. But most of all, she missed Azriel. Gentle, protective, beautiful, thoughtful, safe Azriel. She had felt so safe with him. Cared for and cherished for the first time in her life. And now he was unlikely to ever trust her again.
